When Alexander Schaw of Sauchie and Greenock married Elizabeth Cunningham of Glengarnock in 1539, it was agreed that the lands of West Greenock would go to the heirs male from that marriage. However, Alexander had two natural sons prior to his marriage with Elizabeth named James and Patrick who were legitimised in 1546 shortly before their father’s death. James became Laird of Sauchie and the wine cellar job continued with that branch of the family.
Family
Sir James Shaw of Sauchie, Baronet of Sauchie and Greenock was born about 1530 in Clackmannanshire, Scotland. The seat of the family was Sauchie and Sauchie Tower, which is not far from Stirling Castle, where the Stewart kings of Scotland often held court. He was legitimized in 1546, shortly before his father’s death.
Sir James Shaw was appointed Master of the King's Wine Cellar. He married Marjory Kirkcaldy, the daughter of James Kirkcaldy. Marjory was one of the Ladies at the Queen's court. Sir James Shaw became the Laird of Sauchie and Greenock plus other lands about 1547.
Sir James and Dame Marjory had at least four children:
- The eldest son, James, recieved Sauchie and a title about 1590; Sir James Shaw of Sauchie+2 d. b Aug 1623 . Married Margaret Meldrum
- The second son, John, received Greenock about 1590;
- The third Robert received Lands at Bagarran next to Bishopton. This is where the Brisbane family held their original lands in 1590;
- Patrick lived at Kelso with no lands. He lived on land near Largs. He had his own sons: William, John, James and Hugh. All but William went to Ireland with the Montgomerys.
- It seems their daughter was the Elizabeth Shaw who Married Henry Lindsay, 13th Earl of Crawford
There is a charter in the Register of the Great Seal to Marjory Kirkcaldy, spouse of James Shaw of Sauchie in liferent, and to James Shaw, her son and heir apparent, heritably of the lands of Coldoun, Cavilstoun, and Brunthill, in the shire of Kinross, on resignation by the said James Shaw of Sauchie, dated 2 May, 1558. (Ibid. Lib. 31, No. 421.) James Shaw of Sauchie had a charter from James VI. to himself and Marjory Kirkcaldy, his spouse, in liferent, and to James Shaw, their son, in fee of the barony of Sauchy, elated Apud Castrum de Stirling, 4 August, 1578. (Ibid, Lib. 35, No. 548, and Lib. 36, No, 586, and Writs of Sauchie.) John Shaw, son lawful to ane right honourable man, Sir James Shaw of Sauchy, knight, is named in 1582. (Writs of Sauchie.)
