About Martha PATSY Allen

Martha was either born in NC or TN. It's unknown for certain sure which State she was born in.

Information from a cousin.

Information from Joseph Sanchez, 4th great grandson

Marriage is recorded in the Tennessee State Marriages 1780-2002. Record Image VIEW add alternate information. Report Issue Name: Martha Sharp, Gender Female, Marriage date: August 14, 1846, Marriage Place; Campbell County, Spouse: Joseph Allen

Her children were all fathered by Joseph Allen, so I do not see the reason that some of them seem to have kept the Sharp surname. Maybe all the surnames should be changed to Allen? It seems that her children born before her marriage to Joseph Allen were named Sharp and the children after the marriage were named Allen. Must be a story there somewhere. Does anyone have any information on this?

It seems she had divorced Joseph Allen by the time she was 52, because in the census of 1860 her marriage status is noted as divorced and she is going by the name Martha Patsy Sharp.

She is still noted a being divorced in the census of 1880.

After doing some research to the above questions, below is some interesting data to mull over.

1. Joseph Allen was born c 1767 and dies in 1862. This would have made him 79 years old at the time of the marriage dated above.

2. Martha Sharp born 1808, would have been 38 years old at the time of the marriage dated above.

3. Martha had all the children attributed to Joseph Allen except for one before they were married. Simply look at the date of birth of all her children. The first child George Washington Sharp was born in 1832 and her last child Hiram Allen was born in 1847. And all the children have the last name Sharp except for Hiram who was born after the marriage date.

4. Since Joseph Allen was born c 1767, there could have been a 47 year difference in age between him and Martha. Joseph Allen would have been 80 years old at time of the birth of Hiram.

5. This seems to a very interesting relationship with a lot of questions. Does anyone have any answers?
