About Martha Garrett Hankins

Cleveland County Herald

March 11, 1926 MRS. M. HANKINS, AGED 98, IS DEAD

County's Oldest Resident Died at Home in Whiteville Township

Within less than a month of her 99th birthday, Mrs. Martha Hankins, one of the oldest, if not the oldest, resident of Clevland county, died Monday morning at her home in Whiteville township. Had the deceased lived until March 31 she would have passed the 99th milestone.

"Grandma" Hankins, as she was affectionatly known in the eastern part of the county and in adjourning counties, had been in excellent health up until a short time ago and her death will come as a distinct surprise to her many friends who were of the belief that she would live past the century mark. For several years she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Ellen Dean, and her birthdays have been the occasion of a reunion of the Hankins family which is one of the oldest and largest in this section of the state. Mrs. Hankins lost her husband several years ago by death, and has lived within a stones throw of her present home for 72 years.

The deceased is survived by four sons, Franklin Hankins of Pine Bluff; two daughters, Mrs. Ellen Dean of Whiteville township and Mrs. Frank Foster of near Rison. A large number of grand, great and great-great-grandchildren survive.

Interment was made in New Home cemetery Tuesday afternoon with the funeral services conducted by the Rev. Mr. Calvert.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Jul 11 2019, 23:47:21 UTC
