About Martha Agnes Stevens

In 1910, Martha Agnes Madsen was 12 years old and was living in Bloomington, Bear Lake, Idaho, with her parents, Anton Peter Madsen, 58, and Jane, 55, (Elizabeth Mary Jane Nelson Madsen) and her siblings, Asa, 26, and Naomi L., 15. Martha's parents had been married for forty years and had eleven children, seven of whom were still living. Anton Madsen had come to America in 1857 from Denmark with his parents when he was about 5 years old. His wife, Jane, was born in Utah, and her father in Missouri and mother in Illinois. All of their children were born in Idaho. Anton was working as a farmer and his son, Asa as a farm laborer on the home farm. The Madsen family owned their farm free from a mortgage.

Martha married Alvin Elmer Stevens on July 22, 1910, in Bloomington, Bear Lake County, Idaho. He was the son of Alexander Alvin Stevens and Louisa Christiana Krogue. Alexander was born in America and Louisa in Germany. Alexander Alvin Stevens was the son of Alexander Roswell Stevens and Rebecca Welker. Rebecca Welker's brother, John Welker, had a daughter, Louisa Roxana Welker, who was married to Christian Madsen, the brother of Anton Peter Madsen, Martha's father. The Welker's and Madsen's were very closely connected, since three of Jacob and Dorthea Madsen's children married three of James Welker and Elizabeth Stoker Welker's children or grandchildren. Jacob and Dorthea Madsen had come to America in 1857 after joining the LDS church in their home in Denmark. James and Elizabeth Stoker Welker had moved from North Carolina to Ohio in the early 1800's but they were both originally from Germany. The Krogue family was also from Denmark.

When Alvin completed his U.S. World War I Draft Registration Card in 1918, he described himself as being of medium height and build with blue eyes and brown hair. He was 36 years old, having been born June 28, 1882, and was working as a brakeman for the OSL Railroad Company in Montpelier, Idaho. He lists his wife, Martha Stevens as his nearest relative. Two years later in 1920 they were still living in Montpelier, Bear Lake, Idaho, and Alvin was 38, Martha, 30, and their children, Leroy A., 6, and Leon K., 10 months old. They own their home free from a mortgage. Alvin is still working as a brakeman on the steam railroad, The Union Pacific Railroad Company.

By 1930, Martha and Alvin have had two more children, Russell A., who is 5 years old, and Elmer L., 3 years old. The family is living on 10th Street in West Montpelier in a home they own valued at $3,500. They have been married for 20 years and Alvin is still working as a brakeman on the steam railroad.

In the 1940 census, the family is still living in Montpelier, and Alvin is 57, Martha, 50, Leroy, 26, Leon, 21, Russel, 15, and Elmer, 13. Alvin has achieved two years of college, Martha 4 years of high school, Leroy, 1 year of college, Leon, 4 years of high school, and Russel and Elmer are still in school. Alvin is still a brakeman for the railroad, and Leroy is working as a locomotive fireman for the railroad too. Leon is a missionary. For the 52 weeks Alvin worked in 1939 at 48 hours per week, he earned $2,221 income, and his son, Leroy worked 32 weeks at 17 hours per week and earned $1,362 income.

Alvin Elmer Stevens passed away March 27, 1957, in Montpelier, Bear Lake, Idaho. Three years later, Martha Agnes Madsen Stevens passed away on April 10, 1960, in Salt Lake City, Utah. She and her husband Alvin are buried in the Montpelier City Cemetery, Montpelier, Bear Lake County, Idaho, USA, Plot: Section 6C, Lot 45, Space 2 for Martha and her husband is in Space 3.

Their son Leroy Alvin Stevens married Edith Ashley, and he passed away in Soda Springs, Caribou County, Idaho, January 20, 1977. Edith Ashley Stevens passed away March 5, 1970. They are both also buried in the Montpelier City Cemetery. Martha and Alvin's other son, Russell Anton Stevens, was a sergeant in the Air Force during World War II. He was born September 7, 1924, in Montpelier and passed away on February 6, 1949, in Diamondville, Lincoln County, Wyoming, at the young age of 25 years old. Russell is also buried in the Montpelier City Cemetery.
