About Naomi Lenore Jarrard

Naomi Lenore Madsen was born April 8, 1895, to Anton Peter Madsen and Elizabeth Mary Jane Nelson Madsen in Bloomington, Bear Lake, Idaho. She was their eleventh and last child. Her father was born Denmark and although her mother was born in Utah, her mother's native tongue according to the 1900 U.S. Federal Census was Dutch. In 1900 the family was living in Bloomington, Anton, 48, Elizabeth, 46, Anton Elmer, 18, Asa, 16, Ezra, 14, Martha A., 11, Nyle Leroy., 8, and Naomi Lenore, 5. Anton and his wife Elizabeth had been married for 30 years, had 11 children, 9 of whom were still living at the time of the census.

Naomi's father, Anton, was born in June of 1851 in Denmark, and his wife, Elizabeth, was born in February, 1854, in Utah. Both of Anton's parents were from Denmark, and Elizabeth's father was born in Illinois and her mother in Iowa. Anton came to America from Denmark with his parents in 1855 and was naturalized. He was working as a farmer and their three oldest sons, Anton Elmer, Asa and Ezra were working on the family farm as farm laborers. The family owned their farm free from a mortgage.

Living next door was Anton Peter's youngest brother, Jacob, 40, and his wife, Mary C. 34, and their children, Vera, 10, Hilda G., 7, and Jacob N., 2 Jacob was the last child of his parents, Jacob and Dorothea Madsen, and their first child to have been born in America instead of Denmark. Jacob was born in Utah in June of 1860. He and his wife had been married for 13 years and they had 3 children. Jacob's wife was born in Idaho and both of her parents in Denmark. Jacob was also working as a farmer. Other neighbors included the Christiansen's, the Dunford's, the Piggott's, the Thornock's, and the Palmer's, all of whom married into the Madsen family.

By the 1910 census, Naomi was 15 and her parents and siblings were listed as: Anton, 58, Elizabeth (listed as Jane), 55, Asa, 26, and Martha A., 20. Anton and Elizabeth had been married for 40 years, had 11 children, 7 of whom were still living. Anton was still farming, and his son Asa was working as a farm laborer. The family was still living in Bloomington, Bear Lake, Idaho. Sadly, just three years later Naomi's mother, Elizabeth Mary Jane Nelson Madsen, passed away at the age of just 58 years old. Seven years later, Naomi was living in San Francisco, California, and was working as a nurse.

By 1920 Naomi was 24 years old, living in San Francisco, at the Mt. Zion Hospital, and was working as a graduate nurse. She was listed there along with about 25 other nurses, including practical nurses, registered nurses, pupil nurses and graduate nurses, so this was probably a teaching hospital. Other people living nearby included salesmen, a stone cutter, a watchman, a stevedore, a tailor, a barber, a janitoress, a musician for an orchestra, and a massage person at a barber shop. People on this census page were from all over the world and the USA, including, New Zealand, Australia, England, Ireland, Scotland, Sweden, Germany, and Poland, and from the USA, Chicago, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Idaho, Ohio, Utah, Kansas, and Washington. It truly was a melting pot of cultures, and Naomi must have learned a lot while she was living there.

Naomi worked as an Army Reserve Nurse during World War I from October 23, 1918 to April 11, 1919. On May 20, 1920, Naomi married Glenn Samuel Bennett in Santa Clara County, California, but they probably were not married for very long, and Naomi then married Andy Clifford Jarrad. I don't think they ever had any children, or at least none that survived infancy.

In the 1930 U.S. Federal Census for Yakima, Washington, it showed that Andy, 45, and Naomi, 35, had been married for ten years and were living at 111 North 1st Street. Also living in their home were four "lodgers", John Lipsie, Edmond Patterson, Eugene Roundtree and Edward Shirling. Andy was working as a cook in a hotel cafe, Naomi as a nurse in a private home, one of their lodgers was working as a laborer in a cafe, one as a laborer in the building trade, one as a laborer in the nursery business, and the 4th was 75 years old and not working.

Per a 1932 and 1933 U.S. City Directory listing, Andy and Naomi were living at 709 S. 8th Street in Yakima, Washington, and he was working as a cook. In the 1940 census they were still living at the same address, a home they owned valued at $2,200. Andy, 56. was working as the manager of his own lunch counter, but Naomi, 45, was not working. Andy was born in Georgia and had an 8th grade education. Naomi had 4 years of high school, and obviously some training as a nurse. They had been living in the same house in 1935.

When Andy completed his U.S. World War II Draft Registration Card in 1942, he was living at the same address, and showed that he was born December 2, 1884, in Cleveland Georgia. He listed the name of the person who would always know his address as his wife, Mrs. A.C. Jarrad of 709 S. 8th Street, Yakima, Washington

For some strange reason, there is a Washington State Marriage Record for Andy C. Jarrad, 58, and Naomi Lenore Madsen, being married May 29, 1944, in Mason, Washington. This doesn't make much sense, since they were living together from about 1930 according to census records.

Andy Clifford Jarrad passed away at the age of 70 years old on December 23, 1954, and was buried in the Tahoma Cemetery in Yakima, Washington. He had served in World War II from July 13, 1940, to March 27, 1942, in Company A of the 186th Infantry. Naomi passed away a little over two years later at the age of 61 years old on January 20, 1957, and was also buried in the Tahoma Cemetery. An application for a military headstone or marker was ordered by her nephew, Monroe Austin, who was living at 613-1/2 North 1st Street in Yakima, at the time he made the application in 1957. Monroe was the son of Naomi's older sister, Afolona and her husband Theodore Hugh Austin.
