MARTIN AUCOIN ET MARTIN AUCOIN DENIS SAVARD / GENS D'ICI Les connaissances au sujet des premiers Aucoin en Acadie ont grandement évolué depuis la publication du Dictionnaire généalogique des familles acadiennes de Stephen White en 1999. La découverte dans les registres paroissiaux de La Rochelle de la famille de Martin Aucoin, menuisier, époux de Barbe Minguet, dont la lle Jeanne est baptisée le 26 novembre 1630 (Rg Ste-Marguerite), amène un nouvel éclairage sur cette famille. Jusque-là, on connaissait la famille de Martin Aucoin, menuisier, qui a épousé Marie Salé le 20 janvier 1632 à Saint-Barthélemy de La Rochelle. On supposait (erronément) que ce couple avait donné naissance au deuxième Martin Aucoin – celui qui donna son nom à la famille acadienne – presque 20 ans plus tard. On sait que Jeanne Aucoin (mariée au pionnier François Girouard) et Michelle Aucoin, la matriarche de la famille Boudrot, étaient soeurs, grâce à trois dispenses de consanguinité entre leurs descendants. Comme le menuisier Arnauld Gion (ou Giou), qui signe comme parrain au baptême de Jeanne Aucoin, appose la même signature au mariage de Martin Aucoin avec Marie Salé deux ans plus tard, on comprend qu’il s’agit bien du même Martin Aucoin, menuisier dans les deux cas, même s’il n’y a pas de mention de veuvage.

   Barbe Minguet semble s’éteindre peu après la naissance de Jeanne Aucoin, mais sa sépulture n’a pas été retracée. Le registre de la paroisse de Saint-Barthélemy nous apprend aussi que Martin Aucoin et Barbe Minguet ont eu au moins un  ls ensemble. Le 31 janvier 1632, soit peu après le décès de Barbe Minguet, a été enterré Nicolas Aucoin « ls de Martin Aucoin et de ___ (blanc)». Du second lit de Martin Aucoin, on lui connaissait un  ls, Jean, baptisé le 15 novembre 1632 dans la paroisse de Saint-Barthélemy. Ma petite contribution à ce dossier a été de reconnaître ce qui est sans doute la sépulture de cet enfant, dans la même paroisse. Le 25 juin 1633 y est inhumé «un petit enfant nommé Jean Coin  ls de ___ Coin menuisier». Comme on ne trouve pas de famille Coin à La Rochelle, la mention de menuisier semble indiquer qu’il s’agit bien de Martin Aucoin dans le rôle du père. Certains chercheurs ont depuis proposé que Martin Aucoin (l’ancien) était le  ls de Martin et de Susanne Barboteau, né en 1595. Sauf qu’il ne s’agit pas là de la famille Aucoin, mais de la famille Angevin (ou Langevin), de la paroisse de Cougne. On n’explique pas ce qui permet de faire un tel rapprochement, ni comment ces Angevin seraient devenus des Aucoin. Il faut donc éviter d’ajouter cette génération supplémentaire faute de preuves, même si ces noms circulent maintenant sur internet. Martin Aucoin et Marie Gaudet Puisque l’on sait que Martin Aucoin (le deuxième) marié vers 1673 à Marie Gaudet ne peut pas être un parent immédiat de Jeanne et Michelle Aucoin, il n’est donc pas le  ls de Martin Aucoin (l’ancien) le menuisier, comme on l’a longtemps cru. On ne connaît pas les parents ni de l’ancien ni du deuxième. Mais au mieux, ils sont peut-être oncle et neveu voire parrain et  lleul. Ce couple, uni vers 1673, connaît une fécondité remarquable. Marie Gaudet,  lle de Denis Gaudet et Martine Gauthier, aurait donné naissance à pas moins de 19 enfants. D’abord installée à Port-Royal, la famille s’établira dans la région du bassin des Mines. Beaucoup de leurs descendants ont des racines dans la région de Chéticamp, au Cap-Breton, issus du petit- ls de l’ancêtre, Pierre à Jean (voir tableau). Les Aucoin de La Rochelle? Si on trouve la famille du menuisier Martin Aucoin à La Rochelle à partir de 1630, on ne peut pas croire pour autant qu’ils y sont depuis très longtemps. Bien au contraire. La ville de La Rochelle était un rempart pour les protestants français (huguenots) dans le premier quart du 17e siècle. Pendant plus d’un an, Louis XIII et le cardinal Richelieu ont tenu la ville sous siège, et la population d’environ 28 000 passera à environ 5500 à la  n du siège en octobre 1628. La ville sera repeuplée surtout de catholiques. Donc les habitants de 1630, pour la plupart, étaient de nouveaux arrivants. La famille Aucoin fait sans doute partie de cette vague de repeuplement. On ne connaît donc toujours pas leur patelin d’origine.
