He was the son of Martin Aucoin and his wife Barbotteau.
His parents were residents of Notre-Dame-de-Cougnes parish, but the church Notre-Dame-de-Cougnes had been destroyed in 1568 and the church of Laleu was used by Catholics at that time, until 1599 when the Sainte-Marguerite chapel was used instead.
Notre-Dame-de-Cougnes is the oldest parish in La Rochelle. Its origin merges with that of the city. Cougnes was a hamlet located on a moundsurrounded by salt marshes. According the the historian Arcère, thename comes from the Celtic Cogn or Coign and refers to a corner, an angle. Cougnes gets spelled Compnes, Coigne, Cognes in historic documents. It is interesting to note that Aucoin when broken to Au Coin, means at the corner or around the corner.

Stephen White has made substantial corrections to his 1999 genealogy of the two Aucoin families (see corrections linked to ≤ref name=DGFA/>).Based on these corrections, Martin Aucoin and his wife Barbe Minguet are the parents of sisters Michelle and Jeanne Aucoin, who used to be recorded separately. Martin and his second wife Marie Sallé no longerhave a son listed as Martin, who married Marie Gaudet.
