Marvin Loyd Welborn, writer, poet, academic monk, retired, lives in retirement, writes and studies full time in Charlottesville, Virginia, among the lovely foothills of the magnificent Blue Ridge Mountains. His personal website is http://tinkwelborn.com where more on his bio and a his very long genealogy can be found, dating back to the 13th century. His other books include Tales of the Tribe, a book of Mythopoeia, and inclusions in several anthologies. You may contact him by email at tinkwelborn@mac.com.

He began his genealogy circa 1973, whilst living in Albuquerque, New Mexico and has identified, to date, over 50,000 ancestors. He has trees on Ancestry.com FTDNA.com, MyHeritage.com, and elsewhere.

Marvin's parents divorced whilst he was aged 6, in Burbank, California, circa 1956. He was raised thenceforth with his maternal relatives in New Mexico -- Marvin's grandparents, Henry Loyd SMITH and Alice Elmira (HENLEY) SMITH -- at 1113 Girard Avenue, Albuquerque. Marvin attended third grade at Bel Air and Monte ?Vista elementary schools, whilst still living with his grandparents.

In 1958, his mother, Geneva Alene (SMITH) WELBORN re-married to John Raymond PHILLIPS, Jr., of Farmington, New Mexico. John R. PHILLIPS attended and graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Engineering. Marvin moved with his mother and step-father to Farmington in 1959, and attended the 4th through 6th grades at Swinburne Elementary, the 7th and 8th grades at Tibbitts Junior High School, respectively.

In 1963, John R. PHILLIPS was accepted to the University of Texas School of Law, in Austin, Texas. Marvin and his mother, Geneva (SMITH) PHILLIPS, moved to Austin in June of that year. In Austin, Marvin attended 9th grade at O.Henry Junior High School, and a partial Sophomore year at Austin High School. He transferred and completed 10th grade at Los Lunas Solomon High School, because of marital incongruities between his mother and step-father. At this time, Marvin lived, again, with his grandparents, H. Loyd SMITH and Alice E. (HENLEY) SMITH who had relocated residence to the suburb Sun Valley, located between Bosque Farms and Los Lunas, New Mexico. The physical location of Sun Valley is one to one and a half miles east of the Rio Grande River. Within the same subdivision lived the children and spouses of H. Loyd SMITH and Alice E. (HENLEY) SMITH: Imogene (SMITH) GRAHAM and husband Charles C. GRAHAM; Mary Jane (SMITH) LEAHY and husband Leonard LEAHY; H. Loyd SMITH Jr., and wife Julia (DANIELS) SMITH. Geneva (SMITH) PHILLIPS returned to Austin to resolve the Marital differences between herself and husband, John R. PHILLIPS. The summer of 1965 Marvin moved with his mother to set up residence back in Farmington, New Mexico; and await for John R. PHILLIPS' graduation and repatriation. Marvin attended Farmingtion High School his Junior and Senior years, and graduated May 23, 1967.

Marvin enlisted in the U.S.Army, the 18th of July 1967, for a 3-year obligation, and was EOT'ed on 20 July 1970, at Fort Ord, California. He took Basic Training at Fort Bliss, Texas; AIT (Advanced Individual Training) at Fort Huachuca, Arizona (Sept-Nov 1967); and temporary billeting at Fort Riley, Kansas (Nov 1967 - February 1968). In February 1968, he was moved to Schofield Barracks on Oahu, Hawaii, for jungle warfare training, in preparation for Vietnam service, with with the 4th Brigade, 6th Infantry Division.

This Brigade was apparently disbanded in Kentucky at the end of the Civil War. Its Insignia bore a six-pointed red star. The Division to which Marvin Welborn was assigned initially comprised of elements from Fort Riley, Kansas and Fort Lewis, Washington. In May 1968, the Viet Cong "May Tet Offensive" changed U.S. Military involvement in Vietnam. The 4th Brigade, 6th Infantry was scheduled for deployment in July of 1968 to the Vietnam War, President Lyndon Baines Johnson initiated a reversal, de-escalation of the war. American troops began to be recalled from Vietnam, and the 4th Brigade 6th Infantry Division was, again, dissolved. Marvin was re- assigned to USARHAW (United States Army Hawaii) Headquarters for the remainder of military service: He remained at Schofield Barracks until July 1970, with the exception of two stints of TDY (Temporary Duty) assignments to Fort Benning, Georgia, as Administrative Assistant to the USARPAC (United States Army Pacific) Rifle and Pistol teams tournaments.

Marvin attended one year of post high school education in the fall of 1970 and the winter of 1971, at The University of Albuquerque and The University of New Mexico, respectively. He was employed at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico for approximately 13 months, from 1971 to 1972. In 1970, Geneva (SMITH) PHILLIPS divorced John Raymond PHILLIPS; and in 1972 John Raymond PHILLIPS died in Farmington, New Mexico. He was a practicing attorney and had, at the time of his death, been appointed Municipal Judge in Farmington. In the fall of 1972, Marvin met Linda Michelle (BRANNICK) CLARK, where they began a relationship. Linda Michelle and Marvin were married 10 August 1974, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Marvin had quit the Veteran's Administration Hospital position, and continued his college education at the University of Albuquerque, and later at the University of New Mexico He graduated from UNM May 1978 with a BA in Sociology and European History.

Marvin and Linda Michelle had one issue, Benjamin Micah WELBORN, born 27 May 1978 at Bernallio County Medical Center. On 28 March 1979, Marvin and his family relocated to Central Virginia, at the request of Linda Michelle. Marvin was employed at the University of Virginia from June 1979 until September 1982. He was employed by SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Inter-bank Financial Telecommunications) on 02 Oct 1982 and retired therefrom in December 2009.
