THOMAS HORTON born about 1602 in Mowsley. He died in 1641 in Springfield, Hampton County, MA at 39 years of age. Thomas married MARY EDDY (sic: unknown) She died 19 Sep 1683 Springfield, Hampton County, MA. Thomas, his wife, Mary and their first born child, Mary Horton, along with his brother, Jeremiah, soon followed their brother, Barnabas across the ocean in the ship, "John and Mary." Thomas and Mary arrived in MA in early 1636 and left immediately for Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut, where their second child, Jeremiah Horton was born.

According to Savage (New England Register, Vol 2) Thomas and Mary removed to Springfield, MA by 1638, but Thomas' name is listed in The History of Springfield on page 41, 1636 - Thomas Horton witnessed Indian Deed and died here 1641.

After Thomas' early death, Widow Mary Horton made marriage contract with Robert Ashley, Proprietor of Springfield, MA town officer and keeper of an ordinary tavern on 07 Aug 1641. Mary was, "possessed of much property and guardian of the children of Thomas Horton."

She had other children with Robert Ashley, all born Springfield, Hampden County, MA:

2. Jonathan Ashley born 25 Feb 1645;
3. Sarah Ashley born 23 Aug 1648;
4. Robert Ashley, born about 1650;

Thomas Horton of Charlestown and Thomas Horton of Springfield have been combined into one may in many publications. The fact that they were two families is proved when Mary (surname unknown) m. ca 1641 Robert Ashley of Springfield. Pynchon court records mention widow Horton with babe in arms marrying Robert Ashley. Mary signed a prenuptial agreement with Robert Ashley for him to educate her son two sons Jeremiah & John. [No son Thomas] Mary (?) (Horton) Ashley gave birth to six Ashley children from 1642-1652 during the same period Mary (Eddy) Horton was having her Horton children in Charlestown.

Robert Ashley and Mary had the following children:

   Called before the court to answer for selling or lending her late husband's gun to an Indian: "The Examination of Widdow Horton about selling her husband peice to the Indians: She saith that she hath not sould it but she confesseth that she lent it to an Indian for it lay spoininge in her seller, but she saith that the Indian is suddenly to bringe it againe and he hath lost about six fatham of wampam in pawne forit: and she saith that she knew of no order against it and doth promistto take it home againe: she cannot tell the Indians name but saith it is an Indian Of Agaam. I tould her if she would speedily get it home againe or else it would cost her dere for no commonwealth would allow of such a misdemenor."
