About Mary Stewart Baines
Baptised 31st May 1898 at Trinity Church, Falkirk, Scotland
James Shirra of Grahamston and Helen Cowan of Camelon were married on 2nd July 1897 at Camelon
On 29 July 1909 left Glasgow on the SS Karoola for Brisbane with her father (her mother had already died in 1899). The trip took 7 weeks via Capetown and Durban, South Africa. From Sydney to Brisbane they travelled on the ship Arawatta which was in serivce on east coast of Australia. On way out they were battened down because of a hurricane. At this time the "Waratah" sank and they had to pick up survivors.
Attended East Brisbane State School
Worked in Alan & Starks Department Store, Queen St, Brisbane - hosiery department for approx 10 years.
Then married Myles Birkett Baines in Brisbane and immediately moved to Myles' farm at Mapleton. This farm was an orange orchard.
Mary gave birth to two daughters.
1939 Just before the war Mary & Myles moved to Brisbane. Firstly stayed with Mary's parents; then rented a house at Buranda; then rented a half house at Ross Street, Woolloongabba; then moved to their own home at 60 Rawson Street, Eagle Junction approx 1954.
