Mary was the daughter of Pennsylvania Congressman and prominent lawyer Samuel B. Edwards. She and her husband were close friends of President and Mrs. Grant. Mary was survived by two daughters: Marie Bakhmeteff and Emily McLean, and a son Truxton Beale. After her death, Truxton had a clock tower built in Bakersfield, California,in her honor. Mrs. Beale died in Washington, DC, where she had lived quietly after losing her sight about 10 years before her passing.
