Sir Thomas Button married Mary, daughter of Sir Walter Rice of Dynevor, Carmarthenshire, and had three sons and a daughter. He made his home at Cardiff.

Miles, his eldest son, married Barbara, the daughter and heiress of Rhys Meurug (‘Merrick’) of Cottrell, Glamorganshire, and his daughter Elizabeth married Col. John Poyer.


Sir Thomas Button, admiral and artic navigator was fourth son of Miles Button of Worlton by Margaret Lewis of Van. He married Mary daughter of Sir Walter Rice of Newton or Dynevor.

note: if born 1565, wrong age to be daughter of this Sir Walter Rice. Removed dates.

ELIZABETH and ADMIRAL SIR THOMAS BUTTON had seven children. In a letter dated APRIL 23, 1633, ADMIRAL SIR THOMAS BUTTON, writes a letter to the King, in which he writes of the utter ruin of himself, his wife, and seven children.

BUTTON, THOMAS ADMIRAL SIR. THOMAS, son of MARGARET LEWIS and MILES BUTTON, of Worlton/Worleton, Glamorganshire, died on APRIL 6, 1634, and was buried on APRIL 8, 1634, in St. Margaret's Westminster. Admiral Sir Thomas Button married ELIZABETH RICE, a daughter of SIR WALTER RICE. In an indentureof agreement, SIR THOMAS BUTTON and his wife ELIZABETH, of LARENNY/LAWRENNY, received a settlement from SIR WALTER RICE. The indenture is as follows: Indenture of agreement between SIR THOMAS BUTTON of Lawrenny, Co. Pembroke, Knight, and SIR WATER sic RICE, of Newtowne, Knight, whereby the former releases to the latter all his right in certain lands in Co. Carmarthen (not herein specified) which the said WATER sic RICE, HENRY his eldest, THOMAS his second son, and ANTHONY his third son, had agreed to convey to the said SIR THOMAS BUTTON, his son in law, and DAME ELIZABETH and their children as a settlement but which the said SIR WATER sic still retains possession of. Dated 20 July 1618. Signed by SIR T. BUTTON.

ADMIRAL SIR THOMAS BUTTON'S wife ELIZABETH was the daughter of SIR WALTER RICE of NEWTON/NEWTOWNE. SIR WALTER RICE was the son and heir of GRIFFITH and ELEANOR (JOHNES/JONES). ELEANOR JOHNES/JONES was the daughter of SIR THOMAS JOHNES/JONES of ABERMARLAIS. GRIFFITH RICE, was High Sheriff of CAERMARTHENSHIRE, in 1567 and 1583. SIR WALTER RICE, was Member of Parliament for CARMARTHENSHIRE, 1584-5, for CARMARTHEN, 1601, and 1604-11, and High Sheriff for CARMARTHENSHIRE, 1586.
