When Thomas Byrd met Mary (Baugh) Howlett, she was the widow of Thomas Howlett (1627–1685). Thomas & Mary (Baugh) Howlett were married c. 1692. Her son Thomas Howlett Jr. (1680–1724) entered this new family, and Thomas Byrd raised him. In July 1710 Thomas Howlett, Jr. was granted leave to administer the estate of his deceased mother after the death of Thomas Byrd, with Captain Thomas Jefferson entering himself security.

Note: There are many accounts of Mary Baugh. Some say she was born much earlier, c. 1640. Some say that she married Thomas Byrd much later, c. 1704 or after, due to court records dated Nov 1, 1704 saying her name was Mary Ayscough. Some say Thomas Byrd had no children since none was mentioned in his Will.
