Mary M. 'Polly' Cox (Gist)

Biography

Mary "Polly" Clark was born about 1797 in Georgia.[1] She was the daughter of John and Rebecca Clark.[1]

She was first married 14 May 1815 in Hopkins County, Kentucky to Wyatt Cox. [2]

Her husband Wyatt died in 1830. The 1840 census shows Polly Cox living in Hopkins County, Kentucky as head of a fourteen person household, which included one male age 20 thru 29, three females ages 10 thru 14, one female age 40 thru 49 (Polly) and nine slaves.[3]

Mary M. Cox was remarried 1 August 1844 in Hopkins County to Thomas Nathaniel Gist.[4]

Apparently Mary and Thomas separated or divorced. In the 1850 census, Mary was recorded as head of household #306 in District No. 2, Hopkins County, Kentucky and her son Samuel was living with her. Note, her age was incorrectly indexed as 30 (actually was kind of scribbled), should have shown age 50 and her son's name was written as Samuel G. Clayton instead of Samuel G. Cox. Her daughter Nancy Clayton and son-in-law Phillip D. Clayton were recorded living next door, household #305.[5] Thomas N. Gist was recorded in the 1850 census living with his son Thomas and his family in District No. 1, Hopkins County, Kentucky.[6]

Mary M. (Clark) Gist died 17 May 1852 in Hopkins County.[1]
