About Mary Elizabeth "Molly" Davis Casebolt
Mary Elizabeth Helvey (c1765-1860). She was not named in the 1792 will of her father but she was named in the 1794 will of her mother as Molly Davis.
There has been some confusion about her name. Her mother's will names both Molly Davis and Elizabeth Davis. Molly Davis is said explicitly to be a daughter. No relationship is named to Elizabeth Davis but she was to share with the other three daughters in the movables. Compounding the problem Molly seems to have used the name Elizabeth by 1800 then returned to the name Mary toward the end. It's not clear whether both references are to daughter Molly Davis or whether Elizabeth was a different person.
Her marriage to Abraham Davis is attested only indirectly. The will of John Davis, proved 14 September 1797 names Abram Davis (deceased) as his son and Betsy, Polly and Susy Davies as Abram's daughters (Wythe Co., VA Will Book 1:90-91). Then, Abraham Davis' wife Elizabeth moved to Lee County, Virginia, "where she may have had a second marriage and thereafter moved to Kentucky" (Susan B. Helvey, Early Settlers of Lee County, 2:551).
When her father's estate was settled in 1800 "There was yet due to two of the legatees, to wit, Elizabeth Casebolt and Catherine Helvey, 27 pounds, 19 shillings, 10 pence each. The Settlement with the Executors of the estate of Henry Helvey decd. was returned to court and ordered to be Recorded 11 September 1800" (Wythe Co. Will Bk. 1:155-157). Elizabeth was probably living with John Casebolt in North Carolina and her sister Catherine was probably living with Joseph Barron in Tennessee.
She probably never married John Casebolt because he was not free to marry, having left his wife, Hannah, and most of his children back in Bath County, Virginia.
- Lee County, VA Order Book No. 1 (1808-1811), page 171, 27 Mar 1810: "And Presented John Casebolt of our County of Lee farmer for living in adultery with Elizabeth Davis by information of Thomas Casebolt farmer in Lee." On 27 Aug 1808 Thomas Casebolt had been recommended to be " added to the commission of peace for the County of Lee" (Lee County, VA Order Book No. 1 (1808-1811), page 171). Thomas Casebolt, the accuser, appears to have been the oldest son of John Casebolt.
John Casebolt must have died before 1827. Elizabeth is listed as head of household on the Personal Property Tax List of Lee County with 1 horse in 1827 and 1828. She appears on the 1830 census as head of household in Lee County. She does not appear on the 1840 census but was perhaps the woman age 70 to 80 in the household of Lovel and Amy (Casebolt) Sergent household in Scott county. She was listed under the name of Mary Casebolt in the 1860 Scott County, Virginia census in the household of Able and Sophia (Casebolt) Collier at age 101 or 107.
