More research on the parentage of Martha Patsy Combs

Believe the name in the start of the bio is in error and should be Martha, not Margaret. Per the will of Patsy's grandfather, John Davis Sr of Wythe Co., VA, written in 1796, Patsy along with two sisters Mary (later married Samuel Lusk) and Susannah FAG #160488525(later married John W. Zion) were named as granddaughters, children of his late son, Abraham Davis. Their mother, Mary Elizabeth Helvey Davis, later lived in KY and SW VA with John Casebolt and had children by him. But they were not married at the time of the births of their children because John Casebolt had a living wife and numerous children which he had abandoned so they were unable to legally marry. Apparently Patsy either went by the Casebolt surname or people thought she was a Casebolt because of the living arragement of her mother and John Casebolt. Patsy's father was Abraham Davis (c1762/1793 Wythe, Co., VA, son of John Davis Sr (d. August 1797) and Mary _____ of Wythe Co., VA. Her father's siblings were George, John, Jacob, Joseph Davis, Betsey (John) Hutsell , Eve (Lewis) Hutsell, Elizabeth (Daniel) Wisely, Barbara (Joseph) Fanning and Mary (John Jr) Fanning. • Records indicate her mother, Elizabeth, moved to Lee County, VA with the kids where she had a 2nd marriage with CASEBOLT and thereafter moved to Kentucky. Never knew her father DAVIS and evidently & as an adult used her step-dad's family name CASEBOLT.

(Martha 'Patsy' is a bit of a mystery: was Martha Patsy Casebolt who married Shadrack Combs, the same person as 'Betsy' Davis, daughter of Elizabeth Unknown? It is thought so...)

Records indicate that her father Abraham Davis' wife her mother, Elizabeth, moved to Lee County, VA with the kids where she may have had a second marriage and thereafter moved to Kentucky.

Evidently named in her grandfather's 1796 will, which says "Betsy". My own guess is that the will was dictated and "Patsy" was heard as "Betsy" -- and when read back, John's old ears did not pick up the difference.

Also, in those days "Patsy" was a common nickname for "Martha" -- note Jefferson's daughter's names in the movie Jefferson in Paris. Martha never knew her father and evidently as an adult used her step-dad's family name.
