About Mary Elizabeth Steele
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/109579754/elizabeth-sayler
Mary Elizabeth was born March 22, 1758 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania.
In 1777, she and Jacob Sayler were married in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Her husband Jacob, learned to be a gunsmith by trade. During the Revolutionary War he was a artificer for the colonial forces. Mary Elizabeth as was the custom of the time raised the children, kept house and was responsible for the kitchen garden.
Jacob and Mary Elizabeth had ten children; Micah, Mary, Jacob, John, Henry, Elizabeth, Katherine, Sarah, Hestor and David. One thing I found interesting is that their children spelled the last name three different ways--Sayler, Saylor, and Sailor.
After the Revolutionary War, Jacob and Mary Elizabeth moved to Bedford, Pennsylvania, where she had been born. Eventually they moved to Pickaway County, Ohio, where they raised their growing family until Jacob died September 21, 1800.
When Jacob died Mary Elizabeth was left with a large young family of ten children. After battling with the stern realities of life in that hilly region of Pickaway County, Ohio, she determined to emigrate to the West.
Being a woman of strong will and energy, she finally was able to arrive at her purpose, reaching what was then called the Northwest Territory. After many hardships she settled her family about midway between Chillicothe and Circleville. It was here that her family reached adulthood.
Mary Elizabeth died August 28, 1823 in Pickaway County, Ohio at 65 years of age.
