Research Notes

Dates of Birth, Marriage

No records (court, etc.) that would give a better idea of when Hugh Smith or his wife Mary were born have been found.

Hugh and Mary's first daughter, Mary, was born 17 March 1641/42. Hugh and Mary, then, were married by the middle of 1641, perhaps as much as a year earlier.

Mary's daughter by her second husband, Jeremiah Ellsworth, Rebecca, was born 2 May 1659. Mary, then, probably wouldn't have been born much earlier than 1618.

Mary, if born in 1618, would have been 22 in 1640. If Hugh were, say, 25, he would have been born about 1615. He probably wouldn't have been much younger than that, but he also could have been years older.

Parentage

Mary's origin is unknown. This profile was previously connected to parents John Ellsworth and Lucia Bower. There is no evidence of Mary's surname at birth being Ellsworth. No evidence of a connection between these families has been found. See G2G post: Hugh Smith, Great Migration immigrant of Rowley. Parentage and Wife. … Somewhere along the way Hugh Smith of Rowley became associated, with absolutely no basis in fact, with the titled Smiths of Hatherton. … I imagine that her remarriage to an Ellsworth may have at some point resulted in acquiring Ellsworth as her birth name.”
