Sometime prior to 1413, John married Margaret, daughter of Walter Greene of Bridgnorth, Shropshire.[5] The Walter Greene to whom John granted lands (with several others) in 1420/1 and 1432/3 (see below) may have been Margaret's brother (or her perhaps her father).
Their eldest son, Ralph, was born in or before 1413 and no doubt named after his uncle. Ralph died at about the same time as his father, being still alive when John wrote his will, but dead three months later when younger son Henry is recorded as heir.[2][6][7]
Second son Henry was born at Stepney, Middlesex (on the outskirts of the City of London) on 6 November 1414.[8] He was baptised there shortly thereafter.[8] He became heir to his father due to the early death of elder brother Ralph.[9]
John also had two daughters: Marjorie who married Henry Huddlestone and Isabel who married Richard de Vere.[2][6]
Will and Death
John Greene wrote his will on 28 January 1432/3, in which he was described as "John Greene of Herdwyk" (ie Hardwick, Northamptonshire).[14] Key people mentioned in the will are:[6]
- Wife Margaret
- Son Rauf
- Son Herry
- Daughters Margery and Issabel (both unmarried)
- Sister Lady Felbrigg [this is sister in law, Katherine Mallory, widow of brother Ralph Greene, who married 2nd to Simon Felbrigge]
John died on 9 February 1432/3,[9] aged about 45 years. Given that eldest son Ralph died at about the same time, it seems likely that they both died of one of the many infectious diseases that were common at the time. Perhaps they were both early victims of the pneumonic plague epidemic which impacted England in 1433-1435.
He probably died at Hardwick, Northamptonshire.[6]
