The GANGES left port ill equipped for the voyage ahead. The subsequent court enquiry in Auckland after the high mortality rate from hooping cough and bronchitis (54 out of approximately 150 children) established several factors that contributed: overcrowding, inadequate ventilation, insufficient and improper food, poor cooking facilities and medical comforts either not being available or not issued upon instruction from the Surgeon Superintendent.

Once landed, families were housed in poor accommodation in Auckland and Waikato.
Mary Jane died during this time, aged 3.

Note: MyHeritage profiles show a Hannah/Hannah Jane born to John and Mary Ann Hart, 1871. No record of this with BDM. John and Mary Ann had Thomas George in 1871, died 1871.
