A description (particularly humorous with respect to the change around the American Revolution) of the evolution of the Hoard family name is given at:
http://sjhoard.tripod.com/hoardfamilygenealogysite/
Northen Hoard's: Evolving of name..... le Hore > Hore > Hoar > Hoard
Ezekia Hore (Hezekiah Hoar, born about 1608 in Devon, England) came from England and settled in Taunton, MA about 1633. The branches of this family spread West, but mostly stayed in the northern states.
le Hore > Hore - the "le" was dropped sometime between 1100 and 1300 most likely and became just Hore.
Hore > Hoar - the name appears to have been changed upon entry to America about 1633.
Hoar > Hoard - the name appears to have been changed at the pressing of the females of the family about the time of the American Revolution (1776)
The name took on many spelling variations. Most all of this line appear to have remained in the northern states well up to the 1900's.
