About Mary Ellen Hughes

Death of an Aged Lady. Mrs. Mary Hughes, relict of Henry C. Hughes, died at the home of her daughter. Mrs. Elizabeth Taylor, at 219 Moxahala Ave, shortly after noon yesterday. Mrs. Hughes was in her eighty sixth year and had for several years been confined to her bed with ailments incident to old age. Her maiden name was Winn and she was born in Culpepper county, Virginia in 1812. She removed with her parents to Mt. Sterling, this county, early in life. When a young woman she was married to Henry C. Hughes, of this city, and to them a large family of children was born. Of these four survive their mother--Henry and William Hughes of Colorado, and George Hughes and Mrs. Elizabeth Taylor, of this city. Three sisters of Mrs. Hughes also survive her--Mrs. Jeanette Starkey and Mrs. Trumbull, who live in the west, and Mrs. Ann Lemon, of this city. The husband of the deceased was killed in a railroad accident many years ago. No time has yet been set for the funeral.

Zanesville Daily Courier, 6 Sept 1862 Found Dead: H C R Hughes, of Cottage Hill, Muskingum County, was found dead on the Ohio Central railroad track, about 18 miles west of this city. It is not known whether he was thrown from the cars, jumped off the train while in motion, or whether foul means were used to take his life. He was a respectable man, not addicted to drink, and was about 54 years of age. We were unable to learn of any indications of bad treatment, sufficient to cause his death, were discovered on his body. (burial location unknown)

HUGHES WILLIAM H., Coshocton; carpenter and contractor; was born April 9, 1840, in Muskingum county. He is a son of Henry C. R. Hughes, American born, of Irish ancestry. Young Hughes was raised on the farm until about fifteen years of age, when he began to learn the cabinet trade, which he followed until 1861, when he enlisted in Company A, Ninth O. V. C., and served until the close of the war. On returning from the war he resumed his trade at Roscoe, where he followed it until 1869, when he changed to his present trade. In 1871 he came to this city, and has successfully followed the carpenter and contracting business to the present. Mr. Hughes was married August 8, 1866, to Miss Jennie Mirise, daughter of John Mirise, deceased, formerly of Roscoe.
