EATON. Gov. Theophilus Eaton was Gov. of New Haven Colony. In his will of Aug. 12, 1656, he names three children: Theophilus; Mary, wife of Valentine Hill, of Boston, and Hannah.
EATON. A mistake has been made and repeated in regards to the John Lovering part of Mary Eaton's career. John (1) Lovering held land up the Piscataqua, near Salmon Falls, (Wentworth Gene.) on the N. H. side. His wife's name was Esther, and he had at least one son named John. John (1) was drowned in 1668. His son was bound out to Abraham Tilton by the stepfather, Ezekiel Knight, with consent of mother Esther. Esther died Jan. 21), 1675. Abraham Tilton moved to Ipswich and brought John (2) Lovering up to be a carpenter, like himself. John (2) sold the land his father got on a grant, to Thomas Abbott, and settled in Ipswich, marrying Hannah Kilham March 1, 1G86; he was then called John Loverell of the Piscataqua. After Esther Lovering, second wife of Ezekiel Knight, died, he married for third wife, Mary Eaton, widow of Valentine Hill, and she died April 24, 1708.

Pike's Journal, 24 April 1708, says: "Mrs. Knight (formerly wife to Mr. Valentine Hill), deceased through Age, Infirmity and Illness."
Knight. Ezekiel Knight was of Wells as early as 1642. Ho and wife Ann (who made her mark) sold to John Saunders, 20 August 1645, his dwelling-house, with all the out-buildings and land in Wells, John Wheelwright witnessing. Rev. John Wheelwright and Edward Rishworth (father of Wheelwright's son-inlaw, Edward Rishworth, jr.) conveyed to him a tract of marsh in that place 13 June 1645. He bought of the same persons a house, 5 October 1645. He was Commissioner for the town of Wells 1654, 1662, 1663; on the grand jury 29 June 1054; one of seventy-one petitioners to Oliver Cromwell, 12 August 1656, that they remain under the Massachusetts government in 1663, was one of the Associate Justices, and when the authority of the King's Commissioners ended (which continued from 1665 to 1068), he was immediately re-chosen. He was an agent of Righy in granting lands, as against Gorges (whose interest Wheelwright and Rishworth espoused). Righy was active in grants 1657, etc. In 1661, 1 July, it was "Ordered by this Court that," while Wells was without a minister, "Ezekiel Knight and William Hammond shall duly attend the place of public meeting on the Lord's day, and they improve their best abilities in Speaking out of the Word of God, Praying, Singing of Psalms and reading some good Orthodox Sermons." He died in 1687 as above.
Ezekiel Knight appears to have married three times: 1st, Ann , who consented to deed in 1645, as above, and who was living in 1655.
He married, 2d, Esther, widow of John Lovering. There was a John Lovering, undoubtedly the same, who lived at Quamphegan, on a farm that joined the Salmon Falls River on New Hampshire side, 1668, and was drowned about that year, as shown by affidavit recorded at the Registry of Deeds in Exeter. He was from Ipswich, Mass. His son John Lovering took the place and sold it to Capt. Thomas Abbot, who lived on it about thirty-three years.
The inventory of John Lovering, of "Newichwannock," was entered 11 June 1668. In 1670, 4 April, John Lovering, by consent of "his own mother Esther" and "father-inlaw Ezekiel Knight," was apprenticed to Abraham Tilton, carpenter. At the County Court, held at Dover 29 June 1675, Ezekiel Knight brought in his account for support of John Lovering's children from the time he married (date not given) his widow, their mother, until the date when they were "put out"; their mother was then dead, and he was authorized to put out the eldest daughter if he thought best.
Ezekiel Knight appears to have married, 3d, Mary, daughter of Theophilus Eaton, Governor of New Haven, and widow of Valentine Hill.
Valentino Hill, who was of Boston in 1638, and a merchant, and was chosen deacon of the Boston church 17 May 1640; of Dover about 1649, Representative 1652-5 and 7, Associate in 1657, died in 1661. By his first wife, Frances, he had Hannah Hill, baptized 17 March 1i539 (married, 24 Jan. 1660, Antipas Boyce), and four other children who died young. By his second wife, Mary (Eaton), he had, John Hill, baptized 22 August 1647, doubtless died young; Nathaniel Hill, born in March 16oO-60 (who married Sarah, daughter of Anthony and Sarah (Langstaff) Nutter, and granddaughter of Elder Hatevil Nutter, and was captain and left descendants); and Mary Hill (who married John Buss). Mary, widow of [Ezekiel] Knight, testified, not long before 1700, that Nathaniel Hill was son of her first husband, Aealentine Hill, and was born "the last of March 1659-60." "Valentine Hill of Dover in Pascatuq. river in New England, mrcht, & Mary my wife," 2 November 1660, for £230, convey to Nathaniel Micklethayte, of London, 300 acres of land in New Haven, "formerly in possession of Mr. Theophilus Eaton, Esqr., governor of New Haven, given by him as a Legacie to Mary my wife." John Buss, 5 August 1718, quitclaims to Samuel Smith, Daniel Davis, and James Basford, "all claims to the estate of my late wife Mary Buss, formerly Mary Hill, and who was a legatee and coheir with her brother Nathaniel Hill in all the possessions of their father Valentine Hill." Signed by John and Elizabeth Buss.
That Will was made 18 April 1687, proved before Joshua Scottow, 16 September 1687, his loving friends Shubael Dummer (clergyman), Capt. John Alcock, of York, and Mr. John Buss, of Oyster River, N. H. (preacher and physician), overseers; witnessed by Richard Martyn (who afterwards married the widow of Samuel2 Wentworth, of Portsmouth) and Samuel Wheelwright (son of Rev. John, and Judge of Probate 1695 to 1700). He gave to his wife Mary all his estate for life; at her death, two thirds were to go to son Ezekiel Knight, jr., and one third to daughter Elizabeth Wentworth, of Cocheco. If Ezekiel died childless, his two-thirds part was to be divided equally between the children of daughter Elizabeth.

I thought it would be useful for the descendants of John Lovering of Dover to know that NEHGS has just published Robert Charles Anderson's third volume of "The Great Migration" 1634-1635 series. Valentine Hill is covered in the volume. The female married to both Valentine Hill and Ezekiel Knight was not Esther/Hester, but rather Mary Eaton, daughter of Theophilus Eaton (a governor of New Haven). She married Valentine Hill by 1646. Valentine Hill died between 10 December 1660 and 28 June 1661. Mary (Eaton) Hill married second, about 1680, Ezekiel Knight. She died on 24 April 1708.

HILL, VALENTINE, Boston 1636, a mercer from London, I think, ar. co. 1638, freem. 13 May 1640, and on Sunday foll. was, with Jacob Eliot, ord. deae. by w. Frances, wh. d. 17 Feb. 1646, had Hannah, bapt. 17 Mar. 1639; John, b. 1 Sept. 1640, d. soon; Eliz. 12, bapt. 19 Dec. 1641, d. young; Joseph, and Benjamin, tw. 19, bapt. 23 June 1644, both d. soon; by sec. w. Mary, d. of Gov. Eaton, adm. of our ch. 15 May 1647, he had John, bapt. 22 Aug. 1647; and Nathaniel, b. 31 Mar. 1660. He was of great public spirit, grantee in 1641, with others, of the town, or Bendall's dock, and the week foll. was made a selectman, rechos. 1642, 3, 4, 5 and 6; interest in the Ids. at Dover, and prob. liv. some time there, was rep. 1652-5 and 7, and d. 1662. His wid. m. perhaps John Lovering of Dover, and next, Ezekiel Knight of Wells. Hannah m. 24 Jan. 1660, Antipas Boyce.
