About Mary Lee
Thomas Lee was born December 3, 1729, in Nottoway Parish, Isle of Wight County, Colony of Virginia. He was the son of John Lee, Esq and Mary Winford Bryan.
The third and last wife of Captain Thomas Lee was the widow, Mary Ingram Rains. She was born in Springfield Plantation in colonial North Carolina and her parents were Richard Ingram and Ann Moon.
Mary Ingram first married John Rains in 1765. He was killed in 1771 during the Regulator War. Captain Thomas Lee married the widow, Mary Ingram Raines, in 1772.
They were the parents of eight children: Needham Lee 1770-1821 m Susan Bailey; Zilpha Lee 1773-1842 m Thomas Bailey; John Lee 1776-1842 m Frances Lane; Winifred Lee 1778-1815 m William Bailey; William Lee 1784-1815 m Susannah Pangle; Edward Lee 1788-1873 m Sarah Tinsley; James Lee m Mary Hall; and Mary Lee 1794-1871 m Jones Griffin.
Records indicate that Captain Thomas Lee was married three times. Unfortunately, all his wives had the first name Mary, and to make matters worse, the name of his second wife, Mary Ann Bryan, was almost identical to that of his mother, Mary Winford Bryan. These facts have led to much confusion and inaccuracies in recording events in the life of Captain Thomas Lee.
From "Some of the descendants of Capt. Thomas Lee of Hawkins Co., TN" (1972), the children (numbering 14 in total) of Capt. Thomas Lee are: Nicholas, Elizabeth, Thomas, Jr., Eleanor, Edith and Micajah (prior to his marriage to Mary (Ingram) Rains). His children by Mary Rains: Needham, John, Winifred, Zilpha, William, Edward, James and Mary.
Note that there's not a "Greenberry" nor a "Samuel" in the lot, nor is there a "Greenberry" listed in the Lee index to "John Lee, Esq." Note also, that there are TWO Needham Lee-s in my own line of descent from Robert, son of John Lee, Sr. of Johnston Co.
- Edith m. William Gregory
- Eleanor m. Joseph Long
- Thomas J. Lee, Jr. m1 ?; m2 Mary Bacon
- Micajah m1 Sarah Osborne; m2 Sarah Smith; m3 ?
- Nicholas (died young)

Several direct descendants of Thomas Lee have been accepted for membership by the two leading lineage societies, the SAR and DAR. These organizations employ some the best American genealogists to verify the accuracy of the lineage of applicants who apply for membership. Both organizations will now only accept for review applications for membership that use the Patriot, Captain Thomas Lee, that show his marriage to Mary Ingram Rains. This fact alone is sufficient justification for adding to his profile the information I have supplied.
I respectfully request that those individuals who in past have listed erroneous information about the life, marriages, and children of Captain Thomas Lee correct their mistakes. To continue to show unsubstantiated information is a dishonor to his name. Captain Thomas Lee, of Lee Valley Tennessee, is my verified 4th great-grandfather, James F. Haynes, Ph.D. Added March 4, 2022.
