About Mary Josephine McInerney
Mamie was a social worker in Westchester Co. and after her first husband Henry McInerney ran out on her she couldn't afford to care for her children and keep a job so she sent all 5 children to Peekskill, NY to the Catholic orphanage (St. Joseph's?) there, until she could send for them again, 5 years later. Mamie visited children every Sunday, Gaynell took care of Margaret Mary as she was just 3 months old on arrival. According to Margaret Mary, Harry ran away from the home to try to find his father. Mamie came to collect her children just in time as the boys were about to board the train west to be sent to farming families for adoption. (see article in Daily Freeman, October, 17, 1995 Life, page 9, Kingston, NY, USA)
Mamie lived at 204 Ashford Ave., Dobbs Ferry, after 2nd husband James died, and operated the taxi service after his death until she died a year later. Son Thomas McInerney continued the service thereafter. (Dobbs Ferry Register)
