About Mary Elizabeth McKinney

Mary Elizabeth Bryce was born to Alma Nephi Bryce and his wife, Caroline Jorgensen Bryce, October 16, 1893, in Bryce, Graham County, Arizona. Bryce Canyon was named for Mary Elizabeth's paternal grandfather, Ebenezer Adam Bryce. In January of 1920 she was living in Safford, Arizona, and was working as a stenographer at the Bank of Safford.

Mary Elizabeth married Daniel Carroll McKinney on August 31, 1920, in Bakersfield, Kern County, California. At the time, Dan was working as a fireman for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, and had been working for them as early as 1917 in Needles, California. Probably about 1923 they left California and moved back to Arizona. Two children were born to them there, Dan Carroll McKinney, Jr., May 28, 1926, and JoAnn Elizabeth McKinney April 9, 1929, in Fort Huachuca, Cochise, Arizona.

In the 1930 census for Elgin, Santa Cruz County, Arizona, Dan and Mary Elizabeth were living there and were listed as follows in the census: Dan, 32, Mary, 34, Dan, Jr., 3, and JoAnn Elizabeth, 11 months old. Also living in their home were two boarders, Walter Berry, 47, and Dan Harkey, 52. Dan was working as the manager of a cattle ranch, and Walter and Dan were working as laborers or "cowboys," probably on the ranch that Dan was managing. The cost of the rent on their home was included in Dan's salary for being the ranch manager.

In 1937, Dan and Mary Elizabeth were living at 565 Lafayette Road in Phoenix, Arizona, and he was working as the secretary of the Arizona Livestock Producers Credit Association. Sometime after that, Dan divorced Mary Elizabeth and married Olga G. Samardzich, who may have been working for Dan as his secretary at the time. They had a daughter named Thelma Rose McKinney in 1940, but she died fairly young in 1972 from cancer.

In the 1940 U.S. Federal Census for Tucson, Pima County, Arizona, Mary Elizabeth, 35, and her son, Dan Jr., 13, and daughter, JoAnn, 11, were living at 633 Stevart Street, which they were renting for $40 per month. Mary Elizabeth had an 8th grade education, Dan was in the 7th grade and JoAnn was in the 5th grade. They had been living in the same place in 1935. Mary Elizabeth was not working and the census record indicated that she had her own income. Hopefully she was getting child support from Dan, Sr.

In a 1948 U.S. City Directory listing, Mary Elizabeth, Dan, Jr., and JoAnn, were living at 1833 E. 5th Street in Tucson, Arizona. Dan Jr. was a student at the University of Arizona, Mary Elizabeth was working as a stenographer for Conner & Jones, and JoAnn was also a student. Dan, Jr. married his wife Nancy J. Porter, and in about 1951, and they were listed in a U.S. City Directory that year living at 31 East Osborn in Tucson. By 1956 and 1957 they were living in Phoenix at 3137 W. Montecito and he was working as a salesman for the Arizona Machine Company.

Dan Carroll McKinney, Sr., passed away July 21, 1969, and Mary Elizabeth just a few months later on October 9, 1969. She was living in Tucson, Arizona, at the time of her death. She was buried in Bryce, Arizona. Her daughter, Joanie, married a musician by the name of Bud Dashiell, but they did not have any children, and they were divorced. Joanie passed away May 23, 2003, in Tucson, Arizona, and was also buried in Bryce, Arizona.
