JoAnn Elizabeth McKinney was born April 9, 1929, in the U.S. Army Hospital at Fort Huachuca, Cochise County, Arizona, to Dan Carroll McKinney, Sr., and his first wife, Mary Elizabeth Bryce McKinney. They had a son, Dan, Jr. born three years earlier. Sometime around 1939 Dan and Mary divorced and he married for a second time and had another daughter with his second wife. His second daughter, Thelma Rose McKinney Case, born in 1940, was named for Dan's sister, Thelma Josephine McKinney Riess. Thelma Rose died young from cancer in 1972 while living in California. Her husband Sam Elroy Case remarried and passed away in 2015.

The Tucson Daily Citizen of Tucson, Arizona, dated April 12, 1952, tells of the engagement of JoAnn and her future husband Oliver Dashiell as follows: McKinney-Dashiell Betrothal Told: A summer wedding is being planned by Miss joAnn Elizabeth McKinney and Oliver Dashiell, whose engagement has been announced. Miss McKinney is the daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth McKinney, 1833 E. Fifth Street and Dan C. McKinney, Sr., Mr. Dashiell is the son of Mrs. Hilda Victoria Dashiell of New York City and the late Samuel Dashiell. The bride-elect attended Tucson schools and graduated from Tucson high school. She received her education degree from the University of Arizona and has been teaching at Menlo Park School. She is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. Her fiance studied art in New York, Washington D.C., and Virginia. At present he is a lieutenant with the field artillery at Camp Roberts, California.

JoAnne married Oliver Hassard Dashiell June 26, 1952, in Tucson, Arizona. The Tucson Daily Citizen, reported their wedding as follows: "Dashiell-McKinney Rites Read: Now on a wedding trip to Hermosillo and Guaymas are Lt. and Mrs. Oliver Dashiell who were married in a formal ceremony Tuesday evening at St. Phillip’s In The Hills. Rev. Nelson Parke read the double-ring service at 7:30 p.m. before an altar decorated with bouquets and baskets of pink and white gladioli. Traditional wedding music was provided by Andrew Buchhauser. The bride is the former Miss JoAnn Elizabeth McKinney, daughter of Dan Carroll McKinney and Mrs. Elizabeth McKinney of Tucson. Lt. Dashiell is the son of Mrs. Hilda Dashiell of New York City.

For the candlelight service the bride chose a ballerina gown of white nylon set over taffeta, featuring a delicate scroll appliqué. Her veil was held by a matching Juliet cap and she carried a bouquet of pink and white carnations and lilies of the valley. Mrs. Dan C. McKinney, Jr., sister-in-law of the bride, served as matron of honor. Her ballerina gown was of French blue nylon net styled similarly to the ride’s and she carried a bouquet of pink carnations.

Out of town guests at the wedding were Mr. and Mrs. James L. Finley of Dragoon; Mr. and Mrs. Moroni Larson and Tedd and Mona Larson, Mrs. Belle Kempton, Mrs. Ellis Weech and Annabelle Weech all of Safford. The couple will be at home at Camp Roberts, California."

From the same newspaper, dated September 21, 1953, 1st Lt. Dashiell returned from the Korean War and was living at 1830 E. 5th Street in Tucson, Arizona. A 1954 U.S. City Directory Listing showed that Oliver H. and JoAnn Dashiell were living at 201 W. California Street, Apartment 14, El Paso, Texas, and he was still working for the U.S. Army.

From the Tucson Daily Citizen dated November 4, 1960: Under the Divorces heading, Jo Ann McKinney Dashiell vs. Oliver H.P. Dashiell, complaint. It appears Oliver and Jo Ann were divorced sometime between 1960 and 1961, and in April of 1961, Oliver remarried in San Francisco, California, Mary Doherty and they had two daughters. JoAnn never remarried, and she passed away May 23, 2003, at the age of 74 years old while living in Tucson, Arizona. She was buried in the Bryce Cemetery in Bryce, Graham County, Arizona. Her mother's grandfather was the man for whom Bryce Canyon National Park was named.
