About Mary Nichols

Families of Early Hartford, Connecticut By Lucius Barnes Barbour Pg.557

Birth: 1682 Hartford Hartford County Connecticut, USA Death: Feb. 16, 1756 Hartford Hartford County Connecticut, USA

Mary Spencer, the dau. of Samuel Spencer, Sr. of Hartford, Conn. and his wife Sarah, b. at Hartford circa 1681-2. She was the granddau. of William Spencer and Agnes Harris (the memorialist's ancestors); niece of John and Sarah (Spencer) Case, progenitors of the Case family of Simsbury, Conn. (the memorialist's ancestors); and half-niece of Richard Edwards of Hartford (the memorialist's ancestor), her father's half-brother.

Mary m. as his 2nd wife Capt. Cyprian Nichols, Jr. at the Hartford 1st Chh. May 24, 1705 and had ten children. Records of the Hartford 1st Church state "The Wido Mary Nichols died, aetatis 75" on Feb. 16, 1756, meaning that when she died she was 74 years old, and Ætatis suæ (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of her Age) 75.

On the other hand, sextant records state that on Feb. 17, 1756: "The widow Mary N. mother of Lieut. James Nichols, 75" was buried. Unfortunately, the Hoadley compilation of gravestones standing in 1835 at the Ancient Burying Ground (Center Cemetery) does not include Mary (Spencer) Nichols. Since she died only 45 days after her husband, and apparently was interred the day after her death, perhaps she was buried in or adjacent to the same grave as her husband without a separate gravestone.
