Mary Catherine "Polly" Patton was married to James Patton on 5 June 1824 in Jefferson County, Indiana, but after that relationship dissolved, she took up with a native American man who went by the name of William "Bill" Miller. Polly Patton was the daughter of John Hanson and Mary Magdeline (Wahl) Hanson.
For a short time she and James Patton lived in the Patton cave near the border between Lawrence County and Monroe County of Indiana. They later moved to a farm in Marshall Township of Lawrence County. It was this farm that James left Polly and the children to find another woman. After some time, Polly took up with a hired man of her neighbor, William Miller, who was a Native American of the Cherokee tribe, who had taken the name of Bill Miller. Polly died many years later while living in a teepee with Bill Miller, who was now going by a different name.
