Biography

Mary was born on 29 June 1688 in that part of New Kent County that would become King and Queen County, Virginia in 1691, the daughter of James Taylor and Mary Gregory.

In 1701 when she was just thirteen, she married Henry Pendleton and bore him six known children, four sons and two daughters:

  1. Mary Pendleton
  2. Edmund Pendleton
  3. James Pendleton
  4. Nathaniel Pendleton
  5. Isabella Pendleton
  6. John Pendleton

Mary also had the following child:

Unknown Pendleton

Edward Watkins second wife was Mary Bishop TAYLOR PENDLETON (m.Abt 1723). They had the following children:

  1. C) . Mary WATKINS (b.22 Mar 1726 d.13 Nov 1805-Chesterfield County,VA) | sp: Jordan ANDERSON (b.1723 m.15 Sep 1748 d.1805)
  2. D) Sarah Elizabeth WATKINS (b.Abt 1726 d.Abt 1750-Chesterfield County,VA) | sp: "Sir" John CLAY (b.1721 m.Abt 1740 d.1762)
  3. E) Edward (Jr.) WATKINS of Cumberland County, VA (b.Circa 1726 d.1812/1813-Powhatan Co.,VA) | sp: Rhoda THOMPSON (b.1732 m.17 Apr 1759 d.1827)

  6. H) Frances WATKINS | sp: Richard MOSELEY (m.1803)
  7. I) George (son of Edward) WATKINS | sp: Rebecca THOMPSON

In 1779, when she was in her early nineties, or possibly on 10 June 1770, shortly before her eighty-second birthday, Mary died of unknown causes in Bowling Green, Caroline County.

Mary Taylor is recorded (without the middle name Bishop) in the Erasmus Taylor family Bible as having been born 29 Jun 1688. She married Henry Pendleton and died 10 Jun 1770.[1]

This Mary had a younger sister named Mary who was born 15 Nov 1686 and died in infancy.

Origins

"James I was married twice. We know this from bible records also online at the Library of VA website. His first wife was the mother of James Taylor II. Her name is not given in these records or any other records (but is often listed with no sources as Frances? Walker?). The second wife of James I was Mary Gregory. The descendants of James Taylor I are from James Taylor II, his sister Sarah and from the surviving children he had with Mary Gregory–Anne, Mary, Edmund and John. James Taylor II married Martha Thompson. Sarah Taylor married Robert Powell. Ann Taylor married Edward Eastham, Jr. Mary Taylor married Henry Pendleton and Edward Watkins. Edmund Taylor married Sara. And John Taylor married Catherine Pendleton (the sister of Henry)."

1) A comment by Deborah Barber (contributor #47746291) states in her note of 10/30/16 that there is NO document for Mary's middle name of Bishop. However, the "U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900" shows her name as Mary Bishop Taylor, so it shall remain.

2)I have declined an edit request to change her surname from Pendleton to Watkins. The Watkins marriage was a second marriage for both. Mary is buried in the same cemetery as her first husband, Henry Pendleton, and not with Edward Watkins. Both spouses are linked to her memorial.
