Mary was Cherokee.

Mary was born after 1820. According to the Eastern Cherokee application of daughter Cornelia Powell her parents were John Welch, a Cherokee and Elizabeth Blythe. [1] The family of John Welch is listed on the 1835 Cherokee census, living in the Valley River area, Cherokee Nation, now North Carolina. [2] Mary remained in the East at Removal, and she and her children Cornelia, Marcus, Robert, Francis, Joseph, Mary, and John are listed on the 1852 Chapman Roll of Cherokee East of the Mississippi. Her parents and siblings are also on the roll. [3]
