About Mary Quinn
It is not clear that this Quinn line continues to this day. The records show that two daughters Mary and Margaret Quinn were baptised - however, it is not know if Mary or Margaret ever marries or had there own children.
The Quinn headstone (noting Mary's maiden name as Holdcroft) is immediately on the RHS along the pathway leading to the main entrance to Knockbridge RC church.
Further information relating to Mary from the Knockbridge RC records: On 18th Oct 1883, Mary (along with Joseph Cawley) was a witness to the baptism of James Sloane (parents Richard Sloane and Mary Kelledy).
There is a further reference to the Kelledy family on page 31 of the Knockbridge RC records, this time for the baptism of Mary to James Quinn. The witnesses were Jim Kelledy and Eliza Hanratty. Were the Kelledys possibly related in some way to the Quinns? Was Eliza Hanratty in some way related to the Holdcrofts?
Other information in relation to Mary: she was married 14th February 1894, with the witnesses being Joe Connolly and Kate Watters.
However, by the time of the 1901 census, Mary is registered as a widow living in house number 10 in Ballinlough in Knockbridge along with her two daughters Mary and Margaret. The later 1911 census puts Mary at age 47, still living in Ballinlough but this time there is no mention of her two daughters. Could it be that they had died? It was around this time that my granny's twin sisters Ellen and Jane also died - reportedly from Diphtheria. Was there possibly an outbreak of diphtheria, which is particularly dangerous for children, in Knockbridge at this time? Perhaps Mary erected the headstone herself (though it appears relatively modern)? Perhaps this accounts for the prominence of the Holdcroft name on the headstone?
