About Mary Ross

[Mary Goodnow] was daughter of Thomas Goodnow, of Shasbury, England, one of the three brothers of that name who were prominent during the settling of Sudbury; Mary Goodnow was born August 25, 1640, and was killed by the Indians in 1707, according to the Sudbury History, though the Marlborough records say that it was Mary, daughter of Samuel Coodnow Sr. and his wife Mary, who were killed at that time.

In April 1657 she was convicted of fornication with James Ross whom she adamantly refused to marry (for a least a year). They did marry on 5 DEC 1658 in Sudbury, Middlesex, MA according to Sudbury Archives. Their eldest daughter Mary was born out of wedlock; 8 more children followed marriage.

Mary married James Ross on 5 Dec 1658 in Sudbury, MA[7][8]

Mary and James had at least 10 children:

  1. Mary (1656-)[9]
  2. Thomas (1660-)
  3. James (1662-)
  4. Jane (1664-)
  5. Dorothy (1667-)
  6. Sarah (1670-)
  7. Elizabeth (1672-)
  8. Susannah (1676-)
  9. Hannah (1678-)
  10. Daniel (1681-)

Her death date is unknown. There is a Mary Goodenow who died on 4/14/1704 in Sudbury, but she was married to John Goodenow and her maiden name is Axtell. Unable to find any death records for Mary Ross in Massachusetts.

She died before 10 February 1728/29 when, thirty-seven years after she, with son James, was granted administration on her husband's estate, James Rosse of Sudbury surviving Administrator on the Estate of James Rosse of sd. Town is cited to appear before the Judge of Probate... to render an account of his Administration.[10]
