Biography

“Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of the ..., Volume 3” By William Richard Cutter. Page 1603. GoogleBooks

(1) Edward, brother of Robert Sanderson, was the immigrant ancestor of the branch of the family of which this sketch treats. He was born in England and came to Watertown about the same time as his brother. He sold his house and land in Watertown to William Shattuck Sr., and probably removed to Cambridge. The name is frequently spelled Sanders and Saunders on the early records. He married, October 15, 1645, Mary, believed to be the eldest daughter of Bagot and Bridget Eggleston, of Dorchester, later of Windsor, Connecticut. Their children were: Jonathan, see forward, and Hester, baptized March 20, 1686-87.

”Family Memorials: Genealogies of the Families and Descendants of ..., Volume 2” By Henry Bond. Page 931. GoogleBooks

Edward Saunders is mentioned as a proprietor, of Wat, in 1674. Mary Eggleston, dr. of Bigot, was born Mar. 29, 1641, and Mary, wife of Edward Sanderson, may have been site, of Bigot. Jan. 29, 1660-1, Edward Sanderson was then living in Wat, with six chil., in indigence. Ann Sanders, of Wat, was bap. in 1st Church of Boston, Oct. 29, 1654. It was probably his widow (“Sanders”), who was assisted by the selectmen, in Jan, 1687. There is little doubt that Abigail Saunders, wife of Shubael Child [5], . Hannah Saunders, wife of Richard Norcross, Jr. [10], were drs. of Edward Sanerson. p. 417.

Notes

There are no official records of other children born to Edward and Mary Sanderson in Watertown, but in January of 1661, town records show that they had six children who were illiterate, and the family was becoming a burden—not only for Edward, but for the town itself. The family was one of four identified by the selectmen as providing an inadequate education for their children. In a town meeting of 28 Jan 1664 the town gave Edward money to support his family. Later in May, the town voted to give Edward three bushels of Indian corn. In 1671, a town clerk wrote that Edward was indigent and two young daughters (probably Hester and Abigail) were apprenticed out, to ensure their education and relieve the financial burden on the family. In 1663, Jonathan, the eldest child, worked as a servant for Justinian Holden of Cambridge for 4 or 5 years, beginning at the age of 17. Watertown paid for the care of Edward's children at least through 1676. (Edward also may have had a son named John in England by Elizabeth Brightman.)

Disputed Origins

Not the same as Mary Eggleston

Mary Eggleston (1613 - before 1630), daughter of Bygod Eggleston and Mary Talcott, was born 6 January 1613 and baptised 19 January 1613/4 at St. Margaret's, Norwich, Norfolk, England. She died prior to her father's emigration with her three surviving brothers to the Colonies about 1630. She DID NOT marry Edward Saunderson (c1615 - c1645) - this is an error caused by confusing this Mary Eggleston, daughter of Bygod, with a Mary Egellston in the Colonies.

Robert Anderson, author of The Great Migration, disputes that she was the daughter of Bygot (Bagot, etc) Eggleston of Connecticut. Anderson says it “is unlikely for many reasons: the Mary baptized in Norwich in 1614 would have been thirty at the time of this marriage; Bigod did not name her or any of her children in his will; and the Egglestons of Windsor had no known connection with Watertown at this early date.”

The origin of Mary Eggleston is not positively known. An article was published in The American Genealogist by:

  • Patricia Law Hatcher, "Enigma #31: The possible origin of Mary (Egellston) Sanderson of Watertown, Massachusetts," The American Genealogist, Volume 90 (2018) , page 51, 2018.

Her summary about Eggleston families was:

  • Mary is not the daughter of Bigod Eggleston of Settringham (Great Migration Begins)
  • Egelden children listed in Hercules list in 1614/5 not found in New England
  • Edmund Edenden of Cranbrook, Maidstone, and Tenterden, Kent, immigrated by 1637 to Scituate
  • Elizabeth (Bennett) Igguledon (later Patchen), widow of Stephen Iggleden, immigrated in 1638
  • Jane (--) (Eggleton) Britton (later Cole) immigrated by 1650 to Woburn

She argues for the fourth identification: Mary, daughter of Elizabeth Bennett, widow of Stephen Iggleden.

Kent (which lies between Tenterden and Biddenden), who died on the voyage and by his will, dated 16 June 1638 and probated at Boston, left a reversionary bequest to “widowe Igleden the late wife of Stephen Igleden or to his children or to her children she had by him.” She settled at Roxbury, Mass., where as “ Widdow Iggulden ” she appears in a list of proprietors in 1639. Three years later her marriage appears in Roxbury : “ Joseph Patching and Elizabeth Ingulden, Apr. 10," 1642. On 20 Oct. 1646 “Egleden, daughter in law to Joseph Patchen she was about 10 y. old, she dyed of a paine first in her head, then in her back” (Roxbury Church Records). “Goodwife Patchin a poor old woman " joined the Roxbury Church 14 Mar. 1649–50, and her two sons Joseph and John Patchen were baptized. Joseph Patchen removed in 1651 to Fairfield, Conn.“
