Biography

Mary Browning was baptised in April 1587 in Coaley, Gloucestershire, England and died 4 Feb 1667 in North Nibley, Gloucestershire, England.

She was the daughter of John Browning of Cowley. He was born in 1561, the eldest son and heir of Richard Browninge and Elizabeth Parsons. He married Christian daughter of Nicholas Webb of Kingswood and had three children - John, Mary and Ursula.

Her husband was John Smith of Nibley, his 2nd wife.

JOHN3 SMYTH (Thomas2, William1), was born 10 Nov. 1567 in Gloucestershire, 1st son of (3) Thomas2 and (AY-2) Joane (ALLAYNE) SMYTH, [14]. He died on 24 February 1641[14].

He married twice.

1. 5 Oct. 1597, Grace (d. 9 Nov. 1609), da. and h. of William Thomas of Wotton-under-Edge, Glos., wid. of John Drewe of North Nibley, s.p.
2. Cowley, on 9 Jan. 1609, MARY BROWNING[13], who was born in 1569 in North Nibley[14]. [12, 14, 15]

• 12 iii. ELIZABETH SMYTH, b. about 1615. Married Edward Hill.
• 14 v. MARY SMYTH. baptised 24 Mar 1615/16 parish register states that Mary Smyth baptised, the eldest daughter of Mr John Smyth
• 13 iv. URSULA SMYTH, b. in 1618. Married William Thorp of Wandswell.
• 15 vi. WILLIAM SMYTH, b. in 1625. married Catherine Martin of Nibley.
• 16 vii. SARA SMYTH, b. in 1627.
• 17 viii. GEORGE SMYTH, b. in 1629. married Mary Offley of the City of London
• 18 ix. RICHARD SMYTH, b. in 1631. baptised 3 April 1631[11] and died 27 Feb 1642 at North Nible

Thomas Smyth, born 22 Apr 1623[15], married Mary Fowler,[11] died in 1684[4] - see Research Notes:

The pedigree in the Berkeley Manuscripts shows a son Thomas baptised on 10 December 1613.[11] Alumni Oxonienses records a Thomas Smith, son of John of Nibley, subscribed to Lincoln College, Oxford, on 13 April 1638, and dying in 1684.[4] John Smyth's will makes clear that there was a son Thomas born on 22 April 1623.[15] This suggests that there were two sons called Thomas, one of whom died in childhood.
