About Mary Ann Tebassige

Mrs. Mary Ann Tebassige ( born Mary Ann Pitawanakwat c1858) is listed as # 1453 on the 1907 Wooster Roll. She should not be confused with Mary Ann Tebassige # 1393. Her traditional name "Omamikwe" was translated in the roll as "Sioux woman" but "Omamakis" is associated with small pox so the translation given in the 1907 Wooster Roll requires scrutiny and comment by a person with expertise in Anishinaabemowin and Potawatomi culture and the history of the relationship between the Potawatomi and Sioux people. Mrs. Mary Ann Tebassige is a daughter of a Canadian Potawatomi matriarch, Elizabeth Pitawanakwat, who was age 28 when Mary Ann was born. As of 1907 Mrs. Mary Ann Tebassige was a resident of Wikwemikong Reservation (Unceded territory) on Manitoulin Island, Ontario.
