Biography

Mary, the daughter of Jonathan Brewster and Lucretia Oldham was born 16 April 1627 in Plymouth Colony.[1]

On either 10th or 12th of November* in 1645, John Turner, son of Humphrey and Lydia Turner of Scituate, Massachusetts, married Mary Brewster, granddaughter of Pilgrim William Brewster. Mary Turner was the mother of all thirteen of John Turner's children. Thus, John Turner's descendants are Mayflower descendants through his wife Mary [Brewster] Turner.

John died very shortly before the inventory of his estate, which was taken on May 20, 1697. He made his will 4 March 1695, and it was proved 28 June 1697.

Mary Brewster still living on March 23, 1697/8, when she signed with her mark a receipt dated March 23, 1697/8. [2]

Children

Mary & John Turner had 13 children, the second dying at birth. The others lived at least 30 some as long as 80 years.

Research Notes

  • Conflicting Marriage Dates

In the Brewster Book, by Mary's father Jonathan Brewster, he writes that she married John Turner the elder on 10 Nov 1645.[3] [4] [5] George Bowman, writing in his article John Turner, Senior, and Mary Brewster, Their Marriage and Their Children, in Vol 32, page 28, of The Mayflower Descendant, states he has not found evidence to show which is correct - the date written by her father, Nov 10, or the civil record of Plymouth Colony made by Secretary of the Colony. [In other such confusion of dates in the early colonial records, it was often the case that the earlier date was the wedding in the church, and later date was when it was registered by the civil authorities.]

Disputed Marriage

Mary Brewster, daughter of Jonathan and Lucretia (Oldham) Brewster, was not married to Samuel Fuller. There were many women named Mary Brewster in that location and time, and I have not located which of them married Samuel Fuller. She was definitely not the granddaughter of the Pilgrim, William Brewster, profiled in the above text.

Mary was born in 1627. She passed away about 1698.
