About Mary Watkins

Not the same as Mary Melton

Disambiguation

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Farrar-96

There is a persistent myth, perpetuated by those of Melton ancestry, that Mary Farrar Watkins married a Robert Melton. This confusion is caused by some family researcher that decided to morph the surname Farr into Farrar. The ostensible reason for this crime appears to be a desire on the part of the Melton's to obtain an Ancient Planters certificate.

There is absolutely no evidence or documentation of a marriage between Mary Farrar Watkins and Robert Melton.

It is claimed that Mary Farrar and Robert Melton married in 1730, however Mary Farrar and her husband Joseph Watkins had a daughter Mary Watkins who was born 1732, two years after the "marriage" of Mary Farr and Robert Melton.

An allied mistake is the conflation of Elizabeth O Farr who also married a Melton into Elizabeth Farrar. This one is easier to disprove because neither Thomas Farrar who married Katherine Perrin or his brother William Farrar III who married Priscilla Baugh had a daughter by name of Elizabeth. --- Notes - Event: Misc 1738 Had an illegitimate child while still a widow of Joseph Watkins

"Sorry but there is no Mary Farrar descended from Councillor William Farrar and his wife Cecily widow of Samuel Jordan, who married a Robert Melton. In fact there is a claim by the Melton's that she had a sister Elizabeth (O.) Farrar who married William James Melton, both claim that these girls were daughters of Thomas Farrar and Katherine Perrin, but for a number of reasons that is impossible ....."

  • With Ancestry DNA family matches Mary Farrar is only a direct family name match. DNA testing needs to be done by a male family member to prove my DNA match with Mary Farrar. Otherwise I have not yet found any legal documentation that supports the Farrar line connecting to the Melton line. Find A Grave information does not support the findings of graves or the marriage of Mary Farrar and Robert Melton.

Mary Farrar
Twenty-five years ago, when the Mashburn Genealogy Archives was hosted on servers at Avana (even before being hosted at Rootsweb), a researcher copied my information wrong. This was easy to do because the old DOS screens were very clunky. Since one could not scroll multiple generations, one could easly click on the wrong link and get on a different branch of the tree.

Unfortunately, this researcher posted wrong data on Ancestry.Com and it has been passed around and copied as fact. There are now hundreds of trees on Ancestry.Com that state Edward Mashborne was married to Mary Farrar. This is wrong. Mary Farrar was married to Henry Watkins. The researcher misread my chart.

NOTICE:

I, Steve Allen Mashburn, will pay $100.00 to anyone who can show me evidence of a marriage between Edward Mashburn, the schoolmaster from London, and Mary Farrar.

A citation of "Ancestry Family Tree" is not evidence. Ancestry.Com is an excellent source for primary data but the family trees submitted by members are, for the most part, merely "cut and paste" from other undocumented family trees.
