About Mary Wharton

From the Jackson Daily News, May 26, 1902, p. 8:

Death of Mrs. Wharton One of Jackson’s Old Landmarks Gone Yesterday afternoon, Mrs. Mary Wharton, wife of the late Judge T. J. Wharton, passed away at the family residence on President street, after an illness which extended over two years. Mrs. Wharton was in the 81st year of her age, and was a native of Nashville, Tenn., being the daughter of the late Rev. John T. Edgar of Nashville, Tenn., pastor of the First Presbytrerian church of that city. Mrs. Wharton was a beautiful Christian character, and she bore her sufferings without complaint. Mrs. Wharton came to this city with her husband when it was a struggling village, and here she has passed the major part of her life, and her good deeds and gentle ways were known to all the older residents of this city. As a wife, mother, neighbor and friend, she measured up to the full height. She was a devoted member of the Presbyterian church, and she and her distinguished husband were among the first members of the First Presbyterian church of this city. To the sorrowing loved ones who are left behind the sympathy of this community goes out. The funeral took place this afternoon at 5 o’clock from the First Presbyterian church, and was largely attended.
