  • John Whipple (c. 1617 - 1685)[2] was an early settler of Dorchester in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, who later settled in Providence in the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, where the family became well established.

  • Whipple wrote his will on 8 May 1682, and it was proved three years later on 27 May 1685. His wife had died in 1666, aged about 42,[1] and he and his wife were buried on their own land, but were later moved to the North Burial Ground after its opening in 1700.[2]
  • With his wife Sarah, Whipple had 11 children, the first eight born in Dorchester, and the remainder born in Providence.[5] His oldest son, John, married first Mary Olney, the daughter of Thomas Olney and Mary Small, and secondly Rebecca Scott, the widow of John Scott (son of Richard Scott and Catharine Marbury).[2] .... etc.
  • A grandson of Whipple, Joseph Whipple, Jr. became deputy governor of the colony, and a great grandson, Joseph Whipple, III, was also a deputy governor.[9] Another great grandson, Stephen Hopkins was a governor of the colony, Chief Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court, and signer of the Declaration of Independence.

  • He married his wife, Sarah, at Dorchester, about the year 1639 — 40. His wife was born at Dorchester, about the year 1624, and died at Providence town, 1666; aged about 42 years. She could not have been over sixteen years of age when married. What her name was beside Sarah, we have no knowledge. Mr. Whipple and his wife, united with a church at Dorchester, in 1641. He was a house carpenter by trade, and owned a house, and forty or fifty acres of land, near (what is now called) Neponset village. He lived at Dorchester about eighteen years, and during this time there were born unto him six sons and two daughters.

  • JOHN WHIPPLE Jun. No. 2. (son of Capt. John Whipple Sen. of Providence) was born in Dorchester, Mass. He was baptized (or sprinkled) in 1641, March 9th. Mr. Whipple lived in the town of Providence ; and it appears was quite a popular man in his day. He held various Civil Offices under the Institutions of the young, but growing community. Information on her gravestone sets her birth at Dorchester in about 1624, but this is unlikely since only Plymouth Colony was in existence at that time. ....   • Mrs. Sarah Whipple died in the year 1666, aged 42. Her husband died May 16, 1685, aged 68. His will was made May 8, 1685. He and his wife were first buried near his residence, but as this with other burial places were needed for public uses in the opening of Benefit Street, their remains were removed to the North Burial Ground, where their tombstones are to be seen.

  • HON. JOHN WHIPPLE, eldest son of John, Sen., baptized in infancy, November 7, 1641, in Dorchester, Mass., came with his parents to Providence. He married, first, December 4, 1663, Mary, daughter of Thomas and Mary (Small) Olney, who died about 1676. He married, second, April 15, 1678, Rebecca Scott, widow of John Scott.

  • He became blind in his later years, as appears from the old council records in the proceedings relating to his will. He died December 10, 1700, and his wife presented a will of his that disinherited his only son John, but it was proved that he had stated that "he could not help doing as he had done, for he was now blind and he must do as other would have him," and expressed his desire not to disinherit his son but to help him if he could. The will was set aside because of undue influence on the part of his second wife.
