Subject: [VA-NORTHERN-NECK] Nathaniel-2 Pope and wife Much Married Mary To: Northern Neck Northern Neck List Message-ID:
the latest issue of the Magazine of Virginia arrived, and there is a very timely article in there by Barbara Vines Little titled "A Much Married Woman: Mary (--) Pope Bridges Nicholas Whitliffe.
In it, she dispels the incorrect but oft repeated wife of Nathaniel-2 Pope as being one Mary Lisson and/or Sisson. Her maiden name is not known. Pope was the first of her four husbands. Barbara attributes the error to a misinterpretation of a deed in Westmoreland County from Mary Nicholas, widow, to her sons Nathaniel Pope alias Bridges and Lewis Nicholas (both under age 18), and if either of them or she "fail to survive" the property to go to her brother would go to the living children "of my brother and sister Mr. Dunill Lisson and my Jane Lisson." [citing Deeds, Wills & Patents 1665-1667, p. 315-315a, dated 20 July 1677).
In fact, this was indeed her (SISTER) Jane who had married Dunill Lisson, her first husband and the "brother {in law}" of Mary of the deed.
