Thomas Wilder and his wife Mary Wheeler There is a great deal of controversy about whether Thomas Wilder's wife and the mother of his children was Mary Wheeler or Mary Houghton. The Wilder section in Blackman and Allied Families, by Alfred Lyman Holman, 1928, reports on p. 225 explains why Mary Wheeler can be proved to be the wife of Thomas Wilder. It seems that Samuel Wheeler, the youngest son of Richard Wheeler and his second wife Sarah Prescott took part in an ill-fated expedition against Quebec in 1690 under Sir William Phips. In 1730 the Massachusetts General Court made grants of land to the heirs of those who took part in that expedition. In the list of those whose claims were allowed in Dorchester Canada, now Ashburnham, Mass., was Joseph Wilder Esq. of Lancaster in the Right of His Uncle Samuel Wheeler. Samuel's brothers had all died and Joseph Wilder was able to make a claim for the land because his mother Mary was the oldest sister of Samuel Wheeler.

Furthermore, John Houghton of Lancaster and his Wife Beatrice Jocelyn, by Marshall Loring McClanahan, 1973, reports that Mary Houghton, daughter of John Houghton, married a different Thomas Wilder who was born in Dedham 28 Jan 1658.

Both the Book of Wilders and the Wilder section on pp. 223-7 in Blackman and Allied Families, by Alfred Lyman Holman, 1928 report that Thomas Wilder was born on 14 Sep 1644 in what is now Lancaster, Worcester Co., MA. and married Mary Wheeler in 25 Jun 1668. (Lancaster Vital Records, p 13) Mary Wheeler was born 5 Oct 1646 in Dedham (Dedham Vital Records, p. 3), daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Turner Wheeler.

Their children included Mary Wilder born in 1676 (and married Jabez Fairbanks), James 1680, Joseph born on 5 July 1683, Sarah 1685, Elizabeth 1687 and Anna 1689.
