And 17 March 1686 - For Mr John Deming sen. 48 bushels of corn upon the account of Jobe Hilliards eldest children. "I say received, pr me, John Buttolph Jr."

  • SecondThomas Wright, in his will, gave to his beloved wife Margaret all the provisions (meat and drink) in his possession at the time of his death, and what movables she thought she would need. He also gives her all the linen in his possession which "was of her own spinning."
  • Third John Elsin. 16 March 1640/41 (?) "A coppy of the dispose of his estate, before Mr. Smith: To my B. Gardner's children, land att the meadowe gate; to my Br'. Margaret died about/before 4 April 1671, the date of her inventory.

She was married three times.*1) Hillier, who is usually identified as Hugh, as Savage suggests that as his name. In his entry under Hugh Hilliard says: "He had wife Margaret, sons Job and Benjamin; and died early."<ref name=Savage>Savage,James. A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England Showing Three Generations of Those Who Came Before May, 1692. Vol. I-IV. Boston, MA, USA: 1860-1862. </ref>*2) John Elsen, who mentions his loving wife and her two sons Job and Benjamin, in his will. He died about 1647/8*3) Thomas Wright, who names her and her two Hillier sons in his will.Perhaps in May 1647. She had two children. Several family genealogies beginning with Stiles' Families of Ancient Wethersfield, names three children, including a John. If indeed there was a John, he died before the 1648 distributionof Elsen's estate and had no children, which eliminates John Hillier of Windsor, as being a child of Margaret & Hugh.

  1. Benjamin
  2. Job

The following information was given in Stiles' Families of Ancient Wethersfield and has been repeated in many subsequent genealogies, but some of it is untrue. :Thomas Wright ... "he m. (2) May, 1647, Margaret, wid. of the John Elson, who had been killed by Inds. in the Wethersfield massacre of 1637; and is said to have been, before her marr. to Elsen the wife of (poss. Hugh) Hilliard (or Hillier), by whom she had 3 ch. (Benj., Job and John Hilliard); she d. 1670/1, without issue by Wright"<ref>Stiles, Henry Reed. Families of Ancient Wethersfield Connecticut; Consisting of the History of Ancient Wethersfield, Comprising the Present Towns of Wethersfield, Rocky Hill, and Newington; and of Glastonbury Prior to Its Incorporation in 1693, from Date of Earliest Settlement Until the Present Time, with Extensive Genealogies and Genealogical Notes on TheirFamilies. Vol II. 1904. </ref>

Incorrect points:*(2) May 1647 has been misinterpreted as 2nd May 1647, but it is certainly married 2nd in May 1647. Where did the May 1647 come from?*Elson, killed by Indians in the Wethersfield massacre. This occurred in 1637 and Elson was living after this time. Did someone get this part of the story confused with the first husband Hugh? There is no list of those who died in the massacre.*There were definitely not three children in any of the probate documents, as discussed above.

Tentative Timeline Really Loose

:1600 ish Hugh and Margaret born.
:1634 Hugh Hilliard in Salem 1634. He was an adult. :Margaret his wife also there probably. :1627 ish Job and Benjamin born :1637 Hugh died :Elson and Margaret marry, no children :1647 Elson died :Margaret remarries to Thomas Wright.:1648 Benjamin was presumably a young adult in 1648 when he had to make bond of 10L by the Connecticut court and promised his good behaviourfor one year. He owned a house that had been Elson's so he is at least 21. :1670 Margaret died. Job decd.- Older children William & Sarah (m.c. 1674). Younger children still minors. Benj. decd. His wife has a married daughter or his wife has a daughter from a previous marriage.:Do you have anything to add?B-404 17:01, 19 February 2016 (EST)
