About Mary Young

Daughter of Bazel Boren and Susannah Bryant

Married Jacob Young, abt 1800

Children - Squire Boren Young, John Young, William Alma Young, Alfred Douglas Young, Elizabeth Young

Married Willis Boren, 30 Jun 1819, Union County, Illinois

Children - Andrew Boren, Susan Boren, Hulda Boren, Persada Boren, Percilla Boren, Mary Boren, Careb Boren, Sarah Ann Boren

Just prior to the birth of Alfred Douglas Young, Jacob went away to work and was not heard from for a year. Years later his son Alfred wrote in his autobiography attributed his parent's divorce to a long work-related absence of his father from home. Jacob and Mary divorced in about 1810.

After the divorce, Mary's father convinced her to move north with him to Union County, Illinois where her children with Jacob grew up. She lived with her father until he died in 1812, then she went to live in the same house as her cousin Willis Boren. They were eventually married on 30 Jun 1819 in Union County, Illinois. Despite his young age, Willis was a good father to Mary's children by Jacob Young and they enjoyed a happy married life together.

The family moved to Gibson County, Tennessee where they joined the Mormon Church in 1843. Mary died about 1848 at Winter Quarters in Pottawattamie County, Iowa.

Willis left Winter Quarters, Nebraska, to join his children in Utah in the summer of 1853. Since Willis Boren's cousin-wife, Mary Boren, died at Winter Quarters, Willis married again to Mary Sampson.

More insight to life sketch above
After Bazel died in 1812, Mary, now around 28, moves into the same house as Willis. I'm assuming this is the home of Bazel's brother, John who is Willis' father. Willis is 16 years of age. Mary has 5 more children between 1812 and 1819 when she marries Willis, who is now 23.

Separated from Jacob in 1809.. 1809: Ma
Separated from Jacob in 1809..
1809: Mary separated from Jacob Young and took the children with her to Union County Illinois, where her father Bazel Boren was living. Alfred Young later wrote (caps added): "I was born in Springfield, Robison [Robertson] County, Tennessee on the 13th of April 1808. My father's name was Jacob Young. My mother's maiden name was Mary Boren... MY FATHER HAD A SON NAMED SQUEIR [Squire] who lived longenough to have a large family. HE ALSO HAD A DAUGHTER, ELIZABETH, who was the next younger child then Squeir who died when about eighteen years old and before marriage.

My brother WILLIAM... THE OLDEST CHILD OF MY MOTHER... raised a large family and died in the town of Washington in southern Utah.

My brother John, born between my brother William and myself died when small; perhaps when five or six years old...

My father was an excellent mechanic and went from home for a considerable distance to labor on a large job and was not heard from for many years.

My mother's father persuaded her to go with him to the state of Illinois. There she lived for several years single, without hearing from her husband.

My father returned to the place where he had left his family and married a Polly Wough [Huff]. I went to Tennessee in the spring of 1842 where I saw my stepmother who was a widow, my father having died. By his second [third] wife he left two children, a boy Jacob and a girl whose name I think was Susan. While among my friends in Tennessee in 1842, I baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, three of my father's brothers and their families...

The apparent accidental separation of my father and mother took place before I was born and I was about one year old when she went to the state of Illinois with her father where as before stated she married Willis Boren. We lived there until I was about twelve years old when the family moved into the state of Kentucky. There they lived about two years and moved into Madison County, Tennessee."

She divorced Jacob Young about 1810 and married her cousin Willis Boren (1796-1895) and came with him to Utah.

Divorce and Remarriage of Mary Boren
1810-1819 , Robertson Co., Tennessee; Union, Illinois; Gibson Co., Tennessee
According to Gary Dean Young, their descendant, Mary Boren Young (eldest daughter of Bazel, Sr. and Susannah Bryan Boren) and Jacob Young separated in 1808. They had five children together. Bazel, Sr.convinced Mary to move north with him toUnion County, Illinois. Union County is where her children grew up.
One of their children, Alfred Young, wrote in his autobiography that his parents divorce was a result of a long work-related absence of his father from home (FHL film 0237886).
Jacob later married Polly Huff, about 1812, in Robertson Co., Tennessee. He and Polly had two more known children. Jacob died about 1843 in Putnam Co., Tennessee.
Mary had been born September 6, 1784 on the frontier in western Virginia territory. She married her cousin Willis Boren June 30, 1819, in Union Co., Illinois. She and Willis had eight more children. They moved to Gibson Co., Tennessee where they joined the Mormon church in 1843. Mary died about 1848 at Winter Quarter in Pottawattamie Territory.
About three years after his separation from Mary, Jacob purchased the Revolutionary War Grant of a North Carolina soldier from the soldier's heirs, in Smith county (August 16, 1811). He married a 2nd cousin on his mother's side, Mary Polly Huff. They had two children together: Jacob Young, Jr. (born about 1813) and Susan (born about 1815).
Mary Boren's father died in 1812 and she began living with her 16 year old cousin, Willis Boren. They eventually married, June 30, 1819. They were married in Union Co., Ilinois (copy of original marriage license, FHL book 977.3995/V2d, page 1). Although he was very young when he began to live with Mary and her children by Jacob Young, it has been passed down through the generations in the Young family that he was a good father to the children and that he and Mary enjoyed a happy married life together.
A son of Jacob and Mary Boren Young, Alfred Douglas Young worte in his autobiography in 1887 (FHL film 0237886) that his father was ". . . an excellent mechanic and went from home for a considerable distance to labor on a large job and was not heard from for a year. My mother's father persuaded her to go with him to the State of Illinois when I was about one year old. there she lived for several years single, without hearing from her husband. She afterwards married another man named Willis Boren. We lived there until I was about twelve years old when the family moved into the State of Kentucky, where they lived about two years and moved into Madison, Tennessee."
