Mary contracted polio at age 4, but had surgery at a children's hospital in Pittsburgh. She could walk, but her foot was at a perpendicular angle. She worked for well-to-do people in the 1930s and later. She lived on the land we previously lived on which was part of the Young estate, and had a house built there. She had a border, Clay Messenger, whom she may or may not have secretly married. Later she moved into Massillon and lived at the Amherst apartments off 1st St. N.E. Just before she passed away she survived a 7-hour colon cancer surgery only to die 2 weeks later in the nursing home of liver cancer. I often stayed at her house on Manchester Avenue or visited for the day. I took her on several day road trips when I was single, working, and had a car.
