Until 1920, Mary MILTE played a very active role as a mother, and together with her husband assisted with the development of the community in Lascelles and surrounding districts. The following article from a local newspaper reflects the role the MILTE family played. The Miss MILTE is her youngest daughter Stella MILTE.
The Woomelang Sun & Lascelles & Ouyen - Fri Oct 1 1920 FAREWELL to MRS & MISS MILTE: For sometime past the residents of Lascelles have been aware that they would be shortly called upon to say goodbye to Mrs & Miss MILTE, who for a number of years have had their home in Lascelles, and been amongst the most highly respected residents. Mrs MILTE having disposed of her home and property interests has decided to migrate southwards and it is with great regret that her many friends have heard of her decision that she has come to this particular parting of the ways. She has been a keen worker in the many movements for the betterment and local welfare of the town and in this respect it is hard to replace her services. Miss MILTE who has grown to young womanhood in the district has also gained a great popularity and close affection in the minds of all who know her, and she has been ever willing to lend assistance in organising and promoting the various social events, the success of which is so necessary to the life of a country centre.
Needless to say that opportunity was taken by the townspeople and district to show their high regard for the departing residents and there was a large attendance at the public function on Friday evening last to bid them farewell. Apologies were received from Rev. Fr. Ryan and Cr. J. L. Roberts.
Mr Hogan, acted as chairman, and in a neat speech referred to the long connection Mrs MILTE had with the district and her many estimable qualities. They all greatly regretted having to say farewell, but could only hope that both Mrs & Miss MILTE would have the best of health, happiness and prosperity wherever they may go.
He was supported in his remarks by Mr G Crone, who on behalf of all the residents of Lascelles presented Mrs MILTE with a handsome gold mounted umbrella, and Miss MILTE with a beautifully finished dressing case.
On behalf of the congregation of the Roman Catholic Church, Mr Welsh also presented Miss MILTE with a well filled wallet of notes in recognition of her services to the Church. Miss MILTE feelingly responded and thanked them all for their beautiful gifts.
Supper was then served and dancing was indulged in till the early hours of the morning. Mrs & Miss MILTE left for their new residence in Melbourne on Wednesday last.
