1902 December 10 Wednesday- Matt PETERI, aged 49 years, of Yellow Jacket, died at the Calumet and Hecla hospital, Calumet, yesterday morning of pneumonia. He leaves a widow and four children to mourn him. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon from the Finnish Lutheran church on Pine Street. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet.
US Census 1910 lists his widow, Kate Peteri.
Matt's wife, Kate Raapako Peteri, of Finnish descent, was 66 years old in 1913. She attended a Christmas party on 24 December 1913 that was held upstairs at the Italian Hall in Calumet, Michigan. Someone shouted "Fire" at the party. The attendees tried to escape by rushing down the stairs. doors at the base of the stairs were closed. A total of 73 people, mostly children, were crushed to death at the base of the stairs, including Kate.
