WORDS OF MATILDA CROCKETT FIELDS, DAUGHTER OF ELIZABETH AND DAVID CROCKETT, TELLING WHY DAVID CROCKETT LEFT TENNESSEE TO GO TO TEXAS.
Matilda Crockett Fields, daughter of Elizabeth Patton and David Crockett, was born in 1821 in Lawrence County, Tennessee, and lived in 1835, when David Crockett left Tennessee to go to Texas, at her parent's home in Weakley County, Tennessee. Matilda lived in West Tennesse until her death in 1890.
To a newspaper in 1882 she told this:
"I remember the day my father came home after his last race (to Congress in 1835). He came in and said to mother, "Well, Bet, I am beat and I'm off for Texas." I don't think father cared much for his defeat, he wanted to go to Texas anyhow. He wanted to move right away, but mother persuaded him to go first and look at the country and then if he liked it we would all go. He seemed very confident the morning he went away that he would soon have us all to join him in Texas. We did not know that he was going into the army until he wrote mother a letter after he got to Texas. We were all greatly distressed when we heard that he had been killed; we could hardly believe it."
I think these words prove, that David Crockett first of all went to Texas to find new land to settle for his family, and they also explain why he spent more than 5 weeks in North Texas exploring the country where he planned to settle. That he later enrolled his name in the Texas army to get those necessary acres to settle is another part of the history.
