His parents are UNKNOWN (it provides info on why the comments below are wrong about his birth date, location, and parents). Also, he did NOT have a son named Benjamin from what anyone can confirm.

MATTHEW BECKWITH (Also stated as mathew Beckwith)

EARLY IMMIGRANT TO THE AMERICAS AND THE GRANDFATHER OF SARAH BECKWITH, WIFE OF WILLIAM MINOR AND MOTHER OF ELIHU MINER

      Captain Matthew Beckwith was born 22 September 1610 in Pontefract, Yorkshire, England, An old medieval town in West Yorkshire, England.  The town has a well known historical market place and, more importantly, a medieval castle which was built in the Norman Conquest era.  His parents were Thomas Beckwith and Ann Dynley. 	He immigrated in 1637 to Massachusetts from England, some say on the Sparrow Hawk, which crashed upon reaching New England.  This may not be accurate as the Sparrow Hawk actually crashed in 1626 and Matthew would have been only 16 at the time.  The ruins of the Sparrow Hawk can still be seen at Pilgrim Hall Museum in Plymouth, Massachusetts. 	He married Elizabeth (Mary) Lynde in 1641 in Hartford, Connecticut Colony.  Her parents were Enoch Lynde (1590-1636) and Elizabeth Digby (1584-1669).  Enoch Lynde was a shipping merchant in the Netherlands engaged in foreign trade.  He was also connected with the postal service between England and Holland.  He was fluent in Dutch and may have been of Dutch extraction.  After Matthew died, Elizabeth married Samuel Buckland.  Elizabeth died in 1682 in Lyme, New London, Connecticut, at age 67. 	Matthew and Elizabeth were the parents of seven children, all of whom lived to adulthood.  The couple did not acquire a home lot until four years after they were married.  Hartford records show that Mary and their first child, a daughter named Mary born in 1643, resided with the household of B, Barnard in Hartford.  This indicated that Matthew traveled and lived aboard his vessels most of the time. 	Matthew, with two other partners, was a ship owner.  They owned three ships, the Speedwell, the Hopewell, and the Endeavor.  These ships ranged from 50 to 82 tons and participated in trade between New England, New Amsterdam, and Barbados.  The Endeavor was the first barque built and launched in New London.  Matthew Beckwith was believed to have been involved  with a couple of wealthy Dutchmen, and one of them, a Captain Sybado, left him a small legacy in his will that was filed in England.  The Endeavor was sold in Barbados for 2000 pounds of sugar.   	In 1645 Matthew purchased land in Hartford from a proprietor, William Platt.  In 1650 he bought more land in Hartford from another proprietor, Thomas Porter.  In the spring of 1651, Matthew was given a home lot in the section of New London known today as East Lyme.  Matthew traveled from port to port, keeping his homeport in Lyme in a section of waterway that became known as Beckwith Cove. Today his former land is known as Rocky Neck State Park in East Lyme.  Many of his children traveled with their father as youngsters.  He received 30 acres of land in 1875 which he passed on to his son Joseph.  	Matthew was not a quiet, obscure man.  His name appears often on the pages of the recorded history of Connecticut.  He was fined once for public drunkenness.  He was a defendant in two separate cases, one for “slander,” in which he paid a fine and did public penitence.  In 1662, at the age of 52, suits were brought against him and three other men for assault.  He paid a fine.  He, in turn, brought suit against two other men for debts owed and for killing his “swine.”  This same Matthew Beckwith is given credit as one of the founders of the church at Branford. 	Matthew died 21 October 1680.  The report says that “Matthew Beckwith, age 70, missing his way in the very dark night, fell from a ledge of rocks about 20 or 30 feet high and beat his brains against a stone he fell upon.”  This gave occasion for a sermon on the providence of God which took away Matthew Beckwith and spared his fellow wayfarer.  The inquest showed that he was then seventy years old.  He is buried in Old Lyme, New London, Connecticut. 	The estate of Matthew Beckwith was appraised at 293 pounds, indicating him to have ranked among the “well circumstanced class of that day.”  He was able to give land “somewhat liberally to his sons.”

Matthew Beckwith was a man of limited education, as he signed with his mark. The only basis for estimating his age is in the account of his accidental death given in Mr. Simon Bradstreet's Journal, printed in the New England Hist. and Ge. Register [9:50]:
1680. Octob. 21 Matthew Becket Senr. aged about 70, missing his way in a very dark night, fell from a Ledge of rocks about 20 or 30 foot high, and beat out his braines against a stone he fell vpon. Another man yet was wth him and was within a yard of ye place, but by gods Provide came not to such an end.
Miss Caulkins gives the date as on "Dec. 13, 1681," but Savage quotes the above date to confound her error. However, Miss Caulkins seem nearly correct, although her exaxt date has not been found on record. There is certain an error in the date as it appears in the printed copy of Bradstreet. The land records show that Matthew Beckwith, Sr., deeded land to his son Matthew on 8 Jan 1680/1, and acknowledged this deed on 6 June 1681. Also, the New London County Court records show that a suit was brought by Matthew Beckwith against John Robbins on 20 Sept. 1681. [The entry is clearly misdated in Bradstreet, and 1681 may be correct, though from the following records the spring of 1682 would seem more likely.]
His inventory was filed with the County Court on 6 June 1682, and the report of the Jury of Inquest appears as a matter of record on 8 June 1682. .. As he was "about 70" his date of birth can be set "about" 1612. At the session of the County Court on 3 June 1673, "Matthew Beckwith was freed from training." Matthew Beckwith ( September 22, 1610 - October 21, 1680 )

MATTHEW BECKWITH was born about 1612 in Essex and came to New England, perhaps as early as 1630, as a merchant trader with a group from Essex that first settled in Watertown and later in Windsor, Weathersfield and Hartford. Hartford Public Records show that on August 1, 1639, Matthew Beckwith was aboard a "pinnace," or small schooner, with other members of the vessel's crew. These schooners were used as trading ships, bringing supplies to the settlements along the Connecticut River in exchange for beaver skins of value in Boston, Providence and New Amsterdam.

In 1641, Matthew married MARY, who was born in 1625. The couple didn't acquire a home lot until four years later. Hartford records show that Mary and their first child, a daughter Mary born in 1643, resided with the household of B. Barnard in Hartford, indicating that Matthew traveled and lived on his vessel. In 1645, Matthew purchased land in Hartford from a proprietor, William Platt. In 1650 he bought more land in Hartford from another proprietor, Thomas Porter. Matthew died in the spring of 1682. Records report that "Matthew Beckwith, age abt. 70, missing his way in the very dark night, fell from a ledge of rocks about 20 or 30 feet high and beat his brains against a stone he fell upon." His widow Mary married Samuel Buckwall (Buckland). Mary died June 30, 1694. Among Matthew and Mary Beckwith's seven children was a son, Matthew Jr. (#40).
