He made the trip from Ohio to California by steam ship c. 1870 with his wife and son, Matthew, and joined his brothers, John and James, in the lumber business. They logged and ran sawmills. The first mill began operation about 1856 near the 5-Mile House (near Hwy 50 or Immigrant Trail). Blairs' District School began in 1865. They also had Dashaway Sawmill, in the vicinity of Sportsman's Hall Restaurant, Pollock Pines, CA. Matthew Blair was killed at their Elk Horn Sawmill in 1867. He had been working alone washing a channel through a 15' bank of sawdust. It caved in and he was found the next day with his dog lying over him, strands of his hair protruding from the sawdust.
